Tascam interface receieves midi in mesaage, midi icon in bottom right corner lights up (thestopes)

I cannot record or send midi messages to HS 7. I can play the virtual software instrument with mouse and hear sound, but cannot trigger the soft synth with controller. I can start up Cubase 4LE and play soft synths immediatly, but not with HS 7. Anyone please help me? I do not want to learn a new software program, I prefer the cakewalk format, but if it dont work.......!
Tascam US144 USB Interface. HS 7XL. Peavey Midi controller.
