This issue aside, I like HS7XL.

Cakewalk responded shortly after my last post and requested the dump file. In my initial contact and again when supplying the dump file, I indicated the problem occurred when I closed BFD and that the error message reported the error was related to bfd2.dll. Cakewalk's response was that the problem was with...wait for it...BFD, and that I should contact fXpansion.

I may follow up as the problem has also occurred with Step Sequencer, for which I assume Cakewalk will request I contact, er, Cakewalk. Other VSTs occasionally act afool as well...for which I should probably contact <insert vendor here>.

I did explain this problem manifested when I began using 7XL, that I had not experienced the issue with HS4XL and am unable to recreate the problem in 4XL. Seems like pertinent information. Since this is more an irritant than a show stopper, I won't expend a lot of energy if Sonar is disinterested.

Hope everyone has a "sound" year.
Re:Crash Dump files missing (Beagle)

if tech support doesn't answer you it's probably because your spam filter is ditching the return emails, send an email to one of them directly.
I have found the dump files, so I will submit a problem report to see if that gets a response.

The dump files are where the error msg said they would be, but are hidden in HS7. Don't think that was the case in HS4. Same with the .INI files.

Probably just talking to myself at this point, but it is cathartic.

Re:Crash Dump files missing (rcmnz)

As an update...

When I installed 7XL, fortunately I didn't uninstall 4XL. I took the 7 project and loaded it into 4 and all's well. I then saved the project in 4 and loaded that back into 7 and the same glitches and crashes appeared as described above. I'm also good in projects created with 4. Those created with 7, or edited and saved with 7, not so much.

The unhandled exception still indicates the error is with BFD, but it's difficutly to believe it is responsible. There is obviously an issue with 7 that is not with 4...maybe a bug...maybe an incorrect setting, though I am at a loss as to what it might be.

As always, all input is appreciated.

I will be contacting Cakewalk and will post back if/when I get answers.

Peace
Re:Crash Dump files missing (rcmnz)

Thanks, Beagle. I'll look into permissions. Just curious what's in the file.

Currently doing a BFD reinstall. The described problem was apparently the beginnings of a death spiral that led to notes being skipped, then whole measures, kits not loading fully due to Out of Mem (though I wasn't), culminating with SONAR crashing just trying to load a project that uses BFD.

FWIW, recently upgraded to 7XL. Not blamin', just sayin'.

Peace

Re:Crash Dump files missing (Beagle)

Unless you're a programmer who is familiar with Sonar's code, I'm not sure what you personally would be able to gain from the dump file except to send it to cakewalk. that, of course, is valuable information, but it will likely still be the same result with or without the dump file - cakewalk's very likely going to say that this is a problem for BFD, not sonar.

the only thing that I can think of that would prevent sonar from creating the file would be if it (sonar) doesn't have permission to write to that folder.

Re:Crash Dump files missing (rcmnz)

Catch 22...figuring out the problem would be helped by access to the file.

The actual message (the one I posted was only illustrative) states:

A fatal error has occurred in plugin 'BFD2.'
Module: C:\Program Files\VSTPlugins\BFD2.dll

The error occurs when BFD is closed but only if the BFD track has been played, i.e., some input, even one note has been given to BFD. If BFD is not open, there is no error when the project is closed.

This began, perhaps coincidentally, after I drew in a MIDI Velocity envelope on a BFD track, something I hadn't done before, and played the project. I deleted the envelope.

I said it was reproducable, but it appears only on existing projects that already use BFD and were created before the first occurrence of the error. I have inserted BFD into a couple of projects that weren't using it, created midi data, played and then closed BFD. Haven't had the error so far on these.

The project where this started was loaded up pretty good. I've systematically removed 3rd party plugs, followed by Cakewalk plugs, and finally Dimension LE. This project is now nothing but audio and BFD. I also verified my EMU 1212 driver was current.

Thanks in advance for any insights you might provide. This is obviously not a show stopper but, I am still curious why SONAR would say a file has been created in C:\folder, yet the path, folder and file do not exist.
Re:Crash Dump files missing (Beagle)

regardless of whether the dump file has been created or not we need to figure out why it's crashing and stop it from doing that. what are you doing when this happens? what do you have in your project, especially what FX and sofstynths do you have? most crashes involving SHS are going to be due to soundcard drivers or third party plugins.

Crash Dump files missing (rcmnz)

I am getting the following error. It is not a show stopper and I can work around it, however, it is reproducable and I am considering submitting to Cakewalk.

The crash dump file it says has been created does not seem to exist. The path is invalid starting with the Application Data subdirectory. A search of the the system drive shows only .dmp files created by Windows in %SystemRoot%\Minidump as directed by the Startup and Recovery options...with old timestamps. There are no files on the drive created with timestamps that correspond to the crash.

Any ideas for locating these files or why they are not being created?

PS. The above shot is for illustrative purposes. For the curious, the actual msg indicates a problem with the BFD2 VST and occurs when BFD2 is open and minimized, the project is played for some amount of time and BFD2 (or the project) is closed.
