Blockfish is also good (and free)

If you want to spend a little money, take a look at some of the UAD plugs. Now that they've been superseded by UAD-2, you can pick up the UAD-1 cards really cheap (off ebay, etc) and the basic 1176 emulation that comes with them is great. The UAD store always seem to have offers and vouchers available so you can add a few more nice plugins (LA-2A is good) at a fairly reasonable price.

Also Bootsy's Density mkII is amazing, sadly for you it's free so it's out of your preferred price range.

What kind of compressor are you looking for? Something tht can do heavy duty character?
