Hi everyone,

I recently discovered the VS-100 and I’m quite interested in getting one. I believe what they mean by playing a track in the background and recording a new track, the background track is not recorded and mixed with the new one. This is EXACTLY what I want and this is far better than recording a new track and mixing the previously recorded one(s). This way there would be no way to fix/remix the tracks in a DAW.

I think this feature (if I’m right) should be the main selling argument since there’s nothing like it on the market as far as I know. There’s a handheld recorder by Korg (SoS) which does this and they have made this their main argument. I wonder why Cakewalk/Roland is not clear regarding this: even in the Owner’s Manual there’s a brief and ambiguous passing mention of this on page 35:

“You can play back a file in the background and record only your playing at the same time.”

While the Korg SoS has stereo condenser mics and guitar amp simulations to record using only the device, it has no Audio/MIDI interface and records only at 16bit 44.1 kHz However it records the WAVs in BWF format which means no matter where in the song you start playing the extra tracks, when dropping the files in your DAW, they will always be placed in the right position on the time line. My question from you guys thus, does the VS-100 do this as well?

There’s also another handheld recorder (mics, guitar sims, trainer but no interface either and 24bit 44.1 kHz max. res.) by Tascam the GT-R1. This one does what VHK seems to want, i.e. it mixes the previously recorded tracks with the new one making further mixing impossible.

If I’m right,with the VS-100 you can prepare a backing track (drums and bass for instance) and add a new track over and over again each time playing back the backing track for as much as your memory card can hold. This means that in a way this is a simple 24 bit, 96 kHz multitrack recorder where you can record at your ease and then drop the files in your DAW for fine tuning and mixing.

I hope I’m not too late on this thread and someone can confirm this. I have also a question from Razor who says the markers do not work when you do this multitracking, is this problem solved?

On the nag side I wish there were a digital out which could turn the VS-100 into an ADC converter/mic pre to use for instance on the 7/8 digital input of my good old VS-880EX, I don’t believe this would affect the price significantly… For the rest, it seems to be a one of a kind sort of product as much as I know.

I try to help but I don't stop by here a lot. I find it surprising that more people don't respond. Even if they don't have an answer they should be able to help better clarify the question. Of course if someone is just asking for an opinion about something I stay away, my opinion really doesn't matter.

hello mr fitz,
well then, that is unfortunate, but what can i do besides help out when and where i can. does that mean that i'm gonna plod through all of these threads trying to answer all these questions... absolutely not, nor would i even have the answer to more than a small fraction of them. but if i'm in the forum and i happen upon a question or two that i feel i could answer or help out with a suggestion, i'll try to stop and write a little something. more than that i won't pretend i can do. i am new to the vstudio 100 myself, but i've been kicking around with live music and audio for a little while. thanks for the help and advise that you supply.

i do not believe that is possible. the sd recorder is two tracks (left/right).
btw razor, what i notice in this forum is not lack of visitors, it's lack of replies. everyone lurks and reads. no one really shares or helps out. it's pretty lame... just look at the number of replies compared to the number of views. it's like, don't even bother posting a question in this forum. no one will bother to reply. that's unfortunate, this could be a great resource.

I just got my VS-100 the other day as well and what you're referring to is called bouncing tracks--FYI. It doesn't look like this forum is visited by very many people to answer your question.

I'm planning on messing around with mine tonight and I'll see if I can bounce tracks as a test and let you know what I find out.

I just bought the VS100 and my question is: I know you can record audio while a backing track is playing, but lets say I wanted to do several over dubbs on top of the audio track while in standalone mode is that possible? For instance, I record a verse while the bacing track plays. Next I want to playback the verse I recorded & the backing track together, while I double up and add emphasis to my vocals., Then take that track and do the same thing: play the 2 verses + backing track while laying down more vocals. Any help would be appreciated.
