I like investigating things I'm unfamiliar with in Sonar, so this was interesting, Grem. Glad we arrived at the solution for getting folders to consistently "sync" between TV and CV. This thread could be of help to people looking for a solution to this issue.

Folders are indeed great for organization, just as you described, making better order out of your views. I'm not sure why I haven't used folders more, the times I have, they were helpful.

I do know that I'm used to having two very different lists in TV and CV, so I've usually kept the "sync" option un-checked. TV is my work area for writing, recording, whittling away, and I'm constantly changing what I want to see there, rarely going to CV very early in a project.

Then when I'm in CV, I keep it to the minimum tracks I need to mix. So I might at a given moment have 60 tracks in TV, 8 or whatever in CV. - That way of working would be handled differently by using folders more.

Glad you stuck it out with me Randy.

I use Track folders all the time. I use it as an organization method. I'll have a lot of takes of vocals, guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and on and on, and I'll put like tracks together and call the folder something like Old Voc Takes, Or Distorted Rhythm Grt. It was getting very frustrating to see all this mess in CV when all I needed was about 8-10 tracks to get what I wanted done! I could get it to go away. But boy was I PO'd when I'd look around and there they all were back again!! PITA!

Randy you are correct. In what I have found out is that if any folder is not collapsed, then no tracks in it will hide in CV. And if you try to manually hide those tracks in CV, then the folder will reappear in TV. Un-collapse (is that a word!!?) the folder and all works as it should.

Cool. I think un-collapse is a good word. So you've confirmed that if the folders are open when you do your track hiding thing via Track Manger, then the two views, Track and Console will be in sync, which means they'll both show the same thing.

It must be something complicated about the programming since in the Console View of course we can't see folders like we do in Track View - Something goes a little funky there.

But looks like we've figured it out, always do the above (open folders before using Track Manager)--and you won't go through hassles like you were earlier. Good deal.

I have 8.3 installed also. Let me check that. And I never thought of the collapsed folders. Because now that you say it, my folders pretty much stay collapsed! Let me try.

Hi, Grem - I'm not sure this will completely useful. I'm using Sonar 8.3.1.

I ran a test to see what happens in my version of Sonar. I wasn't sure what to expect because I've used folders so rarely, I had no idea what the behavior would be.

I used the keybinding of "M" to bring up the Track Manager, not the right click "hide track" or "hide folder" options, because the TM is the utility meant to deal with the visibility of tracks all at once and it's all I ever use.

Results of my test:

--If a folder with tracks in it is expanded, with all tracks visible, then the Track Manager hides them all simultaneously in Track View and Console View when un-checking the folder in the TM dialogue.

--BUT - if the folder is collapsed, with no tracks visible, then when I do the same thing in the TM window, the tracks of that folder are still visible in the Console View. To make the tracks disappear in CV, I need to run TM again, un-checking the folder.

So, to get the TM to be in sync in the two views, with the same tracks visible or not, if you're using folders, they need to be opened at the time you un-check them in the TM. Otherwise you'll have to do the same thing again in the CV.

Not exactly what you were reporting - but maybe this report is helpful?

And I have confirmed this same behavior on Vista64 with S8.5 32.

Until you right click the track folder and select hide folder, the folder and all tracks in it will keep coming back in TV when you right click and select "hide" (in Console View) one of the tracks that's in the folder.

They won't hide on their own in CV. Even when you have "Keep TV and CV In Sync" checked. And when you do go ahead and hide them in CV their folder will reappear in TV (along with everything in it!).

Will someone try and confirm this for me?

I have confirmed that the problem I speak of happens on all my projects.

It seems that if you have tracks that you deselect in Track Manager (and have the box checked to sync to CV) that are in folders, then until you hide the folder with a right click on the folder track and select hide, it will keep poping up again and again.

Get this, I just went upstairs to my studio to try and see what I could do different.

So I started hiding the tracks in CV and on the first one I hid, EZD folder pops back up on the TV. So I stop and think, what if I right click that folder? So I did that just to see what would happen. An option came up to Hide Track Folder. So I selected it and all the tracks that I previously deselected in Track Manager, just went away!

It appears for now problem solved!!! Thanks Randy and SH1.

Ah! Yes, I see now that you already said you have that checked, sorry. Well then, hmmm, that works on my machine, so it does sound like something glitchy happening on yours.

---I see, this is the new version of the earlier question on the other thread.

I just replied to that other thread, pointing out, as Strikinglyhandsome did, that at the bottom of the Track Manager window, you have an option to click on, it's off by default, which will have the two views display the same thing. Visibility changes you make in one view will then be reflected in the other view.

I have one instance of EZD with all outputs (8 I think) and four or five midi input tracks all in a folder. I have another instance of EZD with one out put and several midi inputs in it's own folder. These two folders take up the first 17trks.

I don't need them right now so they are archived.

So in Track manager I deselect them. I have the check mark on the bottom saying Keep Tv and CV in sync. Close Track Manager.

All the tracks go away in TV, but stay in CV. So I right click each one in CV and select hide. When I get to the last track of the first instance of EZD and I click hide, it goes away, but the folder (and all it's tracks) for the second instance of EZD comes back up in TV.

NP, I just keep right clicking the tracks I want hid in CV.

Then I go back to Track manager and deselect the second instance of EZD (because now it is selected) and when I close Track Manager all the tracks I hid in CV now pop back up. All 17 of them. So I try to hid them again and sure enough, after clicking one of the tracks I want hid, the second instance of EZD comes back and on and on!!!

Anyone has experienced this or at least point me to what I may be doing wrong? If I'm not doing something wrong, do ya'll think it may be a bug that needs reporting?

Believe me I am trying my best to be clear on the questions!!! If it's not understandable, let me know!!! I'll try to clear it up!!
