There seems to be the same type of confusions in the questions of this thread.
They've all been answered but I try to list a little:

1) To record, you arm the track AND hit R to actually record. If you press PLAY when a track is armed, nothing will be recorded.

2) Inserting a soft synth the dialogue box gives the options to choose, whether only one audio output track or several are created. Anyway: You drag or record the MIDI on the MIDI track, and when you record the MIDI, nothing is shown on the audio tracks, unless you have waveform preview activated.
The waveform preview on the audio tracks is just a visual addition, and is not at all relevant. Many never use it thinking it's a waste of CPU power, because it can not be edited etc.

3) When recording MIDI, you arm the MIDI track. Arming the audio output tracks separately leads nowhere (actually, I don't remember, if it's even possible).

4) Soft synths are not recorded to audio. When you have the MIDI track edited to your liking, you either bounce or freeze the synth.

5) You can't put MIDI on an audio track or vice versa. MIDI is like electrical sheet music, it contains no sound. Say, recording MIDI drums: all the drums are on the same MIDI track, but depending on the software used, you can route each kitpiece to a separate audio track, in order to adjust the sound and use per kitpiece FX.

There are tutorials and instructions for these most basic things in the help files.

Welcome to the forum.
You don't need the record button on. Read up on 'bouncing' in the help files. That will render the synth audio output to an audio track.
Or you could freeze the synth, which is a tempoary bounce.

Brand new to Sonar X1 Essential. Having the same problem everyone else is having. Trying to record drum synths (established patterns). Have the record button selected on the track, see a waveform, waveform is deleted during playback.
I guess what we're all trying to figure out is how to ultimately record a soft synth pattern to an audio track. Please excuse my ignorance.

Did you read Joneseys post above? Did you try the instructions?
You can get the waveform preview even when you don't record anything . Then during playback of the (empty) track, the waveform preview gets wiped out, because there's no new input to draw the preview of.
Did you press "R" to record in the Armed track?

I don't understand at all what you mean by

Are you trying to record several MIDI tracks simultaneously or what?

How are you recording the MIDI? Your problem description doesn't actually tell what you are doing. With a keyboard controller? What are the MIDI-tracks input and output set to.

The waveform preview has nothing to do with the recording procedure. It's just a visual addition. I never use it.

Hi Folks,
New to Sonar (x1 Essentials). Used older Adobe for may years and can do just about anything...Now with new PC in studio running Win 7 Home Prem 64, old Adobe not compatable (But of Course)LOL. So, purchased Sonar. The learning curve is immense! Soooo many type tracks for one simple operation and the 1845 page manual can still confuse you. But I'll keep learning!

I pose the same question about Soft Synths...I have tried letting the program open and supply the trakcs needed...and the manual way for inserting a soft synth into an instrument track...no matter how I try to do it, I get the same result: If show wave form is armed I can see the synths out put...In any of the other tracks armed for recording I get the red highlighted track but no midi data or anything else in it!!! When you attempt to play back, it erases the wave form and any other tracks that were highlighted just go blank again. And yes I disarmed the record and even tried muting other tracks during playback...

What is the easiest way to take a blank project, insert a soft synth, play/record it and convert it to a wave file?

Once again, it's not entirely clear whether you've actually recorded anything!

Arming the track? Check.
Getting a good input signal? (-18dB to -6db) Check
But what next? Did you press 'R' and then Record your performance?

I can hear the instrument in real time, and I've armed the tracks, but when I playback I hear nothing. If I can get it to show a waveform, it erases the waveform as I play back. I've watched all the videos, read the power book and can't figger it out. please help. Thanks

Hi, I have the self same problem. Was there ever an answer posted? Sometimes mine works other times not, I have the same with waveform wiping issue. Mine happens after recording(?) the soft synth drums.

I'm using Sonar LE, xonar soundcard and i5 pentium with 8mg ram and 1 terrabyte hard-drive

Are you attempting to record the Audio from the soft synth or the Midi?

Different techniques are required depending on what you're doing.

Apparently it won't record any events. It shows the red bar as I'm recording, and it shows a waveform on the associated track, but when I stop and try to listen nothing has been recorded and the cursor erases the waveform. I've tried several different synths on both my macbook pro, and windows7. I'm at a loss.

You don't actually say whether you've actually recorded anything.

Arming the tracks is step one - step 2 is to hit 'R' and start recording.
