Sometimes there's an option in the print settings to print only in B&W. If you turn that on, you can usually still print.

BTW it was not to long ago you could buy a printer that just prints black ink - now you have to have color ink just to print black.

I had a color cartridge run out when going to print a FedEx label.
Even though I had plenty of black ink... couldn't print the label

You can open different versions of Kontakt at the same time. Separate .dlls.

I don't have Kontakt 5, but have had K4 & K3 on the same machine (never tried to load both at the same time though).

Is it possible to have Kontakt 4 and Kontakt 5 running on the same machine? I have GR3 and GR4 running on the same machine, but have not seen anyone mention Kontakt 4 and 5 existing harmoniously. I have some Kontakt 4 Libraries that are script modified for midi guitar and do not want to loose that with Kontakt 5 (although I do not know if there is a problem with K5 yet--I just can't take the chance). Given that NI staff have said they think it will work I suspect they have had it running on XP and Vista PC, but not fully tested it. The upgrade from Kontakt 4 to Komplete is $400 which is quite a bit to shell out without a guarentee it will work. Let's see what crops up on the forums wnen people start installing.

I think NI might have gotten themselves in a pickle if it is true it is only W7 compatible.

This might have been the time I upgraded to Komplete, but that Win 7 only will stop me. I can understand XP support has to be dropped at some stage but I can't understand droping Vista support for a year or two yet.

Lets face it, even if it works on XP or Vista initally, who is to say Kontakt 5.1 will.

Getting in late on this one but feel the need to chime in. I posted something about K5 awhile ago stating that there was really nothing in it for me to upgrade at this point. I think NI might have gotten themselves in a pickle if it is true it is only W7 compatible.

Third Party developers will stay with 4.2.x until W7 is the predominant OS and that will take year IMHO, so unless some KILLER library is released in K5 (don't do it 3P guys), all this just confirmed my sitting on the sidelines on this one.

I already keep K3 on an older machine to convert my commercial sample libraries to K3 if needed. No way I am going to have 3 versions of Kontakt around.

And too bad GigaSampler wasn't nurtured once it was sold to the big guys from the little guys that started the company because I am sure that GS could have given NI a run for their money.

With all that said, Kontakt has just too much universal support (third party libraries) for anyone to make a serious commercial run at them now.

Also, the new Studio Drummer library requires Kontakt 5 and will not run on K4.

Some Musicians think this is already happening. Looks like two options - 1. Keep buying or 2. Go back to hard gear.

ok.. well it depends on what I'm actually converting.. if I want to use my reason stuff.. I convert it to kontakt.. then back out..

as some companies don't offer a crossgrade for other formats, you previously have bought.. and want the full price again.. so thought sod that.. they should be glad of my custom

What do you convert to wav or back to sfz? BTW what converter are you using?

I read about the problem of the sliders not working right with the organs in Kontakt4 - still don't know if they have been fixed or if the fix is in Kontakt5 (being new to Kontakt4 still learning how to load things in it).............- so still don't know if the sliders work for the organs (the Hammond ones).

This was fixed in the 4.2.3 update.

The only problem with the .sfz format is that it needs an advanced/dedicated editor.
Having to manually map samples/parameters via text file is the very definition of tedious!

I just use a converter , I've converted some of my other libs.. BUT there is a problem with SFZ.. there is cakewalks version and later "tweaked" versions .

with regard to the dominance of Kontakt.. it was much like back in the day with Akai 950/1000/3000 etc.. and the odd time you'd go to a place with an emu ESI etc.. BUT with later akai's the made a pigs ear of the OS and it was buggy and lost them customers.

either NI will "annoy" customers with a very buggy version.. .OR the competition will come out with something REALLY next gen. that no one was expecting.

It's a gimmick to assure ongoing upgrade sales.

FWIW, NI often updates the custom scripting capabilities with each version.
If a sample library dev wants to take advantage of those new scripting capabilities... they're forced to use the new version of Kontakt. In some cases, a little script update can mean major new capabilities... or major "ease-of-use" improvement.
So you can choose to dumb down your library (broad appeal)... or support only the latest version (to provide the most advanced/complete capabillites). It's a tough call...

It's up to the library dev to provide compatibility patches, if that's their priority. I have libraries that provide patches for old versions as well as the very latest (with optimizations/enhanements for the latest version). I also use libraries that require the absolute very latest version. Depends on the library producer, nothing to do with NI marketing. Small developers + big complicated sample playback engine = limited backward compatibilty.

Yeah,
MegaTrig is good for simple things... but custom scripts in Kontakt blow it out of the water (if you're talking about complex libraries).

The fact that HALion 3 was (for all intents/purposes) "shelved/abandoned" for many months is a bit of a turn-off.

That said, here's hoping HALion 4 can offer some competition for Kontakt.

HALion 4? (Not a full replacement for Kontakt but probably the closest aside from Indy Pro)

I own Halion4 and can vouch that it is very good. But the big question is going to be third party support.

Haven't bought another Tascam product ever since and never will again....

I am trying to make ARIA my Kontakt replacement - except for the encrypted files - and the development path is very good...I've tweaked a few sfz's,but there's nothing quite like a sample translator to do the work...

I'm really happy with Dimension Pro,Rapture and z3ta+....very good workhorses - especially with the 64 bit Architecture Waveforms dropped into DP & Rapture....

I just wish that Rene was back at CW because he was the one who started it all and his foresight and genius needs to continue to flow through the product line to give the future development of those VI's real spark...

Problem is... Kontakt has such a technological head-start, I don't see many developers willing/able to take the risk.
Especially in a weak economy...

LOL so that leads back to what alternative is there. Which there seems not to be any.
