Still, the difference in my case is significant enough to make the difference between my project being viable or not.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Cactus Music)

Now I'm not sure myself , and someone can chime in here with the correct answer but I think you may be right in that it's the OS and not Sonar that determines the RAM availability. ?? So running 32 bit Sonar under 64 bit Windows will give you better performance \:?

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Kylotan)

Yeah, I am coming to the same conclusion. The problem is, my project needs a lot of 32 bit plugins for guitar simulation, but also needs a lot of address space because Superior Drummer alone takes up almost 1GB of memory. However, having done a little more reading I believe that Sonar 8.5 is "large address aware" which would mean I can get it to use at least 4GB of memory even in the 32 bit version - which would probably solve my problem, since I can stick to 32-bit mode throughout. Hopefully that would be good enough for me to finish my current projects, at least.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (dysamoria)
There ARE some great (& abandoned) 32-bit-only plugs out there. i have a similar situation to yours. i have taken on the policy of not even trying to use 64-bit Sonar with any 32-bit plug-ins. i tried it at first, but the stability & compatibility was abysmal (and seeing as i have a huge number of plug-ins, it was hard to manage).

Now i keep both worlds separate (as they were probably meant to be) & also i've removed every freeware plug-in that isn't in use by one of my projects; i might archive those after freezing the audio, too.

The only way i'm going to deal with 64-bit is with projects that don't need 32-bit plug-ins. By the time i get done with my existing projects, i might abandon the entire platform, though. So 64-bit turned out to be a pipe dream for me very much.

This whole 64-bit transition for audio apps should have started about six years earlier than it did.
Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Kylotan)

I would agree, except there are several guitar amp sims that simply have no equivalents in the 64 bit world, along with many other really good plugins (like the Bootsie ones, for example, or Rubberfilter). Maybe I will just have to revert to the 32 bit version of Sonar for now, and hope the 2GB ram limit isn't a problem.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Cactus Music)

My experience so far with my upgrade to the world of 64 bit is - Old 32 bit projects need to be loaded into 32 bit version of Sonar. In my case they crash in 64 bit. New projects, however run amazingly better with the 64 bit system and that version of Sonar, no looking back. So just wean yourself of all things 32 bit as soon as you can. There are many free plug ins at the KVR site that might do the trick. I'm getting along nicely in the 64 bit world now without using any of my old plugs. Takes a little while to find what you want but it's time well spent. Once I'm finished with the last batch of 32 bit projects I will probably never open the old 32 Sonar again.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Kylotan)

Is there anything among the Blue Cat plugins that isn't just covered by the Sonitus ones? The main things I use beyond the Sonitus VSTs are things like guitar amp sims which can't really replace. The one I've found most elusive in 64bit is a decent high pass filter. I wouldn't mind half as much if Sonar just gave some sort of indication of which plugins were misbehaving. It could just list them in the status bar or something. But as it is I have an entire project that I can't do much with, except perhaps go back to loading it in 32 bit Sonar.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Glyn Barnes)

Kylotan

As mentioned in my first post, all plugins operate on audio as expected, and sometimes Sonar is fine, but occasionally it'll hang. It certainly doesn't seem to be any single plugin, but who knows? If they work sometimes, it's hard to tell. I'm not really in a position to abandon all 32 bit plugins - .

I still use 32 bit plugins and have had rare occasions where bitbrige crashed Sonar. I suspect it will be certain plugins in your collection that are not working well with Bitbrige. I have read that things written in synth edit can be a bit flakey when bridged.

It certainly wont cover all the bases but if you want to reduce your dependence on 32 bit plugins for no cost I recomend Blue Cat's 64-bit freebees.
Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Kylotan)

My specs are Win 7 64-bit, Sonar 8.5.3 64-bit, on an i7 2600, 8GB ram. I do use quite a few 32 bit plugins, and I would assume the problem is in how Sonar is using them. As mentioned in my first post, all plugins operate on audio as expected, and sometimes Sonar is fine, but occasionally it'll hang. It certainly doesn't seem to be any single plugin, but who knows? If they work sometimes, it's hard to tell. I'm not really in a position to abandon all 32 bit plugins - several of the ones I use have no 64-bit equivalent, eg. certain freeware guitar plugins. I've already had to abandon a couple of useful 32 bit plugins such as Rubberfilter which just don't work on 64 bit. The Sonitus ones are good for basic EQ and compression but obviously they don't cover all the bases.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (Glyn Barnes)

Does this happen on on projects. or only those with a certain 32 bit plug in in them? It could be caused by a third party plug that is not compatable with bridging.

Re:64bit Sonar 8.5 repeatedly hanging (BluesMeister)

Kylotan, what are your system specs? I fixed all the hang-on-load errors with loading projects in safe mode and upgrading or removing the offending plugins. But now I just get it hanging when I enable or disable a plugin, or more commonly, when I try and save my work. Obviously there is some compatibility problem with the plugins I use, but I know all of them work on the audio as expected. This is not a guaranteed repeatable bug - the current project was obviously successfully saved once (actually hundreds of times) with these plugins in place, but today it just will not save it. I'm not saying the plugins are completely blameless - though they worked perfectly for years when I used 32bit Sonar - but Sonar gives me no way of diagnosing this problem myself. Hanging on save with no information on-screen or logging of any sort means I'm completely stuck. What can I do?
