i'm not sure of the default tune in battery. my final step was to put it in a choke group w/a closed hihat. i got about 85% of the sound i was looking for and it is completely functional for the purpose it was intended for. that's my story and i'm stickin' to it.

<img src="http://forum.cakewalk.com/upfiles/smiley/s1.gif" alt="" data-smiley="" /> you deserve an award for that ,,, a grammy,,perhaps,,,,

RE: Synthesis/HiHat (three_eyed_otter)

ok,

here's how everything turned out.

my synthesis effort left a lot to be desired. i was able to create some cool and useful sound fx but i wasn't able to achieve the fx i was looking for.
i turned my efforts to samples and began the mangling. i took an open hihat sample and stretched it 100% in Sonar. after normalizing i faded in the sample to get rid
of the clangy transient. slapped a t-Racks compressor on it and maxed it out to phatten the signal and increase the release time. i pulled out the lexicon pantheon- which
i hardly use - and placed a big wide vocal preset on it. i turned up the diffusion and did some other tweekin', reversed the order of the compressor and the reverb added a linear fade and bounced it down to a mono track. i then put the mangled sample back into Battery 2 and turned the bits down to 8 and tuned the sample up 2 semitones. i think? When I think of opening/closing hi-hats, the choke groups in something like the Velocity synth come to mind. I might approach the solution by mangling one of the .wavs that come with the kits in P5 by running through the DS864's Pitch EG and filters, then recording & exporting the results as a .wav file.

You might start with the original open hi-hat sound, or even a cymbal, for resynthesis in the DS864, and choke it off with a modified version of the closed hit-hat .wav drowning in FX [like the Spectral Transformer]. Reload both samples in a custom drum kit. That way, you could vary the length of the first sample's note length in P-Seq by the placement of the second sample, and still retain the basic envelope signature of the original sounds. The real trick would be to come up with a method of varying the "closed-ness" of second sample (perhaps with multiple closed samples?), to emulate what happens with a "real" hi-hat.

Or perhaps you're looking to create a completely unique sustained tone that replaces an open hi-hat in practice. How about a slowed-down metal trash can lid? If you clamp down on it, you can derive the closed hi-hat from it, as well. I've got a Tibetan Singing Bowl here that would be perfect as a raw sample for manipulation. That sucker will sustain forever! With just the right amount of EQ and compression ...

RE: Synthesis/HiHat (three_eyed_otter)

thanks blipp,

i give it a shot and see whats up.

have a good one
3Eo

RE: Synthesis/HiHat (blipp)

Try this free vsti called Drumatic 3.
