running a mic preamp into an audio/digital interface

I'm running a Steinberg MR816x interface. So if my chain is mic to preamp to Steinberg inteface I would be going thru two different preamps since the Steinberg has it's own built in preamp. Is this the way it's normally done? Wouldn't the Steinberg color what your trying to acomplish with a standalone preamp?

    Other than treating the inserts as an unbalanced 'IN' on the unit, you cannot bypass the preamps, so in short the answer is yes the preamps will color the input and no, that is not the preferred method.  One, because it lessens your control tonal possibilities, and Two, because you increase the chance of clipping the mic input, especially if you have little control over the analog source, such as an on location house mixer. 

     I have a unit and use a separate Mytek converter to go in digitally with other preamps and Line sources.

    As rumley sez, you can't bypass the preamp, tho it double as a line input w/ the vol all the way down.  Lots of interfaces do this.  Ideally not the way to go, but shouldn't interfer with much.  It also has inserts for one pair of mics, doesn't it?  You can plug into the "return" and that should be a line.

    Yes it does have inserts, I'll give this a shot, great suggestion.
