same tones on different midi tracks

Hey all,

I am SUPER new to midi, but my band leader is MAKING me figure out how to use it, and use it well.

Okay, keyboard is a Yamaha s90 es, that's what I'm usually using to get midi into the Presonus Firestudio Project.

For some reason, when I set up two different tracks, using the instrument definitions, when I play them both back, they play the same voice, not the two I had set up in the track.

I don't know what info you need, so if you would be so kind as to let me know, that would rock!
P>S> I'm still using Sonar 6.21 or whatever the last patch was.

sounds like to me you have both midi tracks going to same midi channel such as midi 1, you need to route the other one to midi 2 and set it up for that.

Actually, I did change the channel, and no sound would come out of channel two.

Are you using soft synths? If yes, which ones? Are you sure that the midi track isn't playing the sounds from your keyboard and that is what you're hearing?

No, I'm using my Yamaha S90 es keyboard.  I am not trying to use a softsynth now, but that would probably work.  I don't have really any installed except what came with Sonar, if any, haven't even looked into them.  It is playing the instrument definition voices I downloaded for the Yamaha.

One thing is that it's got both usb and midi cables hooked up.  If I use usb for midi, it won't PLAY BACK AUDIO.  If I use the midi cables, I'm getting this same voice issue.

You have to put the S90 in General MIDI mode or multitimbral mode for it to respond to different channels simultaneously. Check the manual for how to do that.
