sampling mp3

Does anybody know of a way to sample a couple of measures off of an mp3 file.  I want to cut out a couple of measures of the percussion part in the Phil Collins song Take me Home.  I want to take these measures and copy and paste them as a repeating percussion part of a song.  Am I making myself understood?

If you have the mp3 file, you can just copy it and bring it into Sonar (import) or just use the media browser to drag it in to a track.

If you don't have the mp3, you need to record it first (capture it).

Ba_midi is correct.  Drag it and edit like any other audio file.  If you have the WAV it'll give you a better result than importing an MP3.

Yes, and you'll have to edit the measures, too.  Find the cut spot and spilt.  Repeat at the end cut.  If you "groove clip" it you'll be able to roll it out as many times as you want.

Don't worry, Phil will still get your wallet (or what's inside it) since even a couple of measures is using his "work." Here's hoping you don't make any money w/ the song, since it will be his.

A better approach might be to load up the sample and then try to duplicate it using whatever drum sampler you own. Phil can't take a commission on that.

That "Phil Collins" sound is a kit recorded in a big, reverberant room (with stone walls, IIRC), through a gate. Most people think there was reverb involved, but there wasn't. Just a lively room. However, if you're using samples a big fat reverb may be just the ticket.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks you guys.  I've not done this process before but I basically drag the file from the explorer view and drop it onto a track.  Then use the scissors to cut out the small part I want.  Get rid of the remains and then do that groove clip thing so I can copy and paste it several times to get my percussion track.
The way I see it, if I compose something that comes to the attention of Sir Phil, then it means its propagating out there, the $ is irrelevant.  Besides, if I don't charge for the song, he has nothing to collect from me.
Again, thanks for all your considerations.

Yep... by using Phil's sampled drums, you can not use that song commercially, without clearance of the samples.

All samples require clearance now days..... read: pay the licensing fees

If you ever have any music accepted into music libraries or by publishers, one of the questions on the submission form deals directly with samples. It asks first if you used ANY samples in the making of this song..... then if you say yes,,, the follow up question is the evidence that you paid the licensing.

Bit's suggestion is good..... try to duplicate the sound in your drum synth's and it's all yours. no licensing needed.

I f I don't charge, he or RIAA can't.  There is a loophole.  If the material is being used as part of an education project.  Example:  If you are writing a college term paper:  You can go to the library and copy data from scientific journals and such, or cut out paste into your paper the conclusions of another author with having to get permission or pay a royalty.  Once you footnote the credit or acknowledge somehow.  Am I right?
