selecting time for export
im having fluctuations in good results with exporting..can you suggest the way you export your songs..say if your tracks start on 6 on the time line..how do i get rid of that empty space at the begining..what im saying is..is the edit/from-edit/to the only way to select the matrial for exporting..i had one mix go for 5 minutes..the song was only 2:45..the end was all blank space. anyone...thank you.

Charlie, Try selecting the material you want to export via the time line. And turn off snap to select a range that stops and starts just before and just beyond your material.

HumbleNoise Charlie, Try selecting the material you want to export via the time line. And turn off snap to select a range that stops and starts just before and just beyond your material. Yep, that's about all there is to it. Depending on where you are in the Time Line, holding CTRL while clicking can de-select parts you don't want - I often double click a track header, which selects the entire project, then with CTRL+Click, select the end time. The Time Line stays selected, except blank space after the ending is now de-selected. Randy B.

I just click and drag across the time line to select a time range. Haven't tried the cntrl advice Randy is giving. Try a couple of methods - you'll know when you have the time line highlighted for the range you want.

Wow control does some strange things - user error I think but I can't seem to deselect an area after using the control key.

Right, what I mean is I sweep through the time line to select what I want. That's after I've selected all the tracks in a project by double clicking any track header. To refine the selection, hold CTRL and click where you want the selection to start, where you want it to end - if those selections weren't exactly right when you did the sweep. Everything stays selected, you're just zeroing in more if needs be, with CTRL. Having the Grid off gives more flexibility to what you're choosing - maybe you want/need a second before the very start for instance, since it's generally not good to have a 2-track master start precisely at the very start, a tiny bit of breathing room is good, just not enough to really be noticed. Having aim assist on can really help to fine tune your selection. Just press 'X'

I use markers to set my begin and end export points. That way the export length is always the same. You can use the markers view to select all the area between the markers, just be aware that selecting the last marker will select everything after that marker, so don't include the "end" export marker when selecting in markers view. Or learn the commands to "Adjust selection to now time" or whatever it's called. Back in version 8.5 (and all the way back to the early days of Cakewalk) those commands were F9 (adjust beginning of selection) and F10 (adjust end of selection). But they were changed for X1 and I don't even remember what they are since I re-assigned them back to F9 and F10. Ok, I looked in the keybindings. In X1 those commands are ctrl-F6 and ctrl-shift-F6. It's the Edit->Select->From=Now and Thru=Now command.
