Scott mentioned one AV that works fine with your DAW. Another option is to disable it IF you don't go on the Internet (but others have said they've gotten issues from files downloaded off of thumbdrives). I'll see if I can find that thread...

Ideally, you'd not have any A/V software on your DAW. If you need A/V software (sending receiving Email and doing general-purpose surfing), then I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. If you're behind a router, not sending/receiving Email, and not doing general-purpose Internet surfing (just going to music specific sites for updates and to authorize software), you don't need A/V software.

I have two HD's on my pc. One of them is partitioned and one half is connected to the internet and runs all my everyday mundane programs on. It has Sonar 6PE on it to use as a sketch book, just to get ideas down fast. The other half of the partition has onnly Sonar 6PE on it with no internet so no av software. The second HD is for saving all my files. It has no operating system on it and its so easy to organize and back up the drive. I have found this to be a great way to run my pc and the sonar only partition runs faultlesly

I too have the Microsoft Security Essentials and have not had any problems with X1 (or 8.5.3) that could even remotely be related to having an Antivirus program running.

I have switched to MSE on all my computers EXCEPT the DAW. It has nothing on it, and it's not internet connected. I ran AV on my lappy DAW. the main thing to remember is, disconnect the net, and shut off the AV while you are working on the DAW. At times, you'll be in the middle of tracking or mixing and the AV decides it needs to update OR run it's scan. That can and does cause problems with the DAW running smooth.

Of course, none is best-but I only have one PC . I use bit defender-it has a game mode (no resources etc and no updating, notifications, nada.and also I exclude 853., X1a, soundforge, etc from any kind of scans except first access. Never an issue here.

Not having AV on your DAW PC is OK as long as you're not plugged into the internet and not plugging in external hard drives, flash drives, or CDs/DVDs from other people. Otherwise, have a 2nd computer that you can use to scan these external sources for viruses before plugging them into your DAW PC without AV installed. I would also recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.
