simple audio track question (exporting)
Hi guys, I have done several vocal 'takes' (many layers in ONE audio track). I've manipulated the various parts and assembled them how I want them to fit. Is there a way to export all these pieces for additional .wav editing so I don't have to bounce them to one clip? I want to retain each part. My problem is that many of the audio parts I've made by slip editing the same audio file (in clip properties they are the same source file) but in my project I've renamed them to suit the part I need. Does this make sense?

And you want to keep all the layers in the same track and only in that track? Well, if you have a wave editor in your tools menu you can edit them that way. I added Adobe Audition to my tools menu for that kind of thing. You can also create an FX bin in any individual clip for processing. And you can click and drag a clip to a separate audio track (Hold the SHIFT key and it won't change horizontal position) for processing/export and then drag it back to the original track when done. You can also click and drag each layer to its own audio track to separate the layers.

I wasn't even aware I could add a wave editor 'to the tools menu'... I'll try that. That's what I actually was hoping for. ---- okay, got it added to the tools menu... is there any way to edit the .wav and then have it save the changes directly to the clip in Sonar or do I have to import the new clip and physically replace the original? -

When I use Audition on a Track/clip about 75% of the time when I Save the clip in Audition, Sonar will ask me if I want to update the track/clip in Sonar. Sometimes Sonar does not ask me if I want to update the clip and I have to Save As the clip in Audition and then Import it as a Wave in Sonar.

I use Wave lab on every track I record by "tool". I have done this hundreds of times and it always works if you do it properly. Highlight the track Select your wave editor in Tools It will open as a new window on top of Sonar. Edit your track ( stereo is supported too) SAVE ---- Most important step!! Return to Sonar via task bar Sonar will ask me to save the changes that have been made to the tool copy. If you don't see this box then you have missed a step. You can still Undo the changes as the "tool" copy is stored as a separate file. For tracks with a bunch of layers and cut / paste this is an excellent way to clean things up as it will come back as one nice tidy package. There are other ways to do this with in Sonar but I LOVE wave lab and can work more efficiently. Just don't ever cut the beginning off a track!! I think another important part of this that I've never verified is I always have "share drivers with other programs" selected.

When you click the editor in TOOLS with your clip selected/highlighted is the editor supposed to open with and load that clip? Mine opens but there's nothing loaded. I use GoldWave

Looks like "Edit-Apply Trimming" will put your clips into individual files, if that's what you're looking for.

With Wave Lab the audio file will automatically be loaded and ready to edit. The file will be named " tool copy of Track 6 Guitar"

What kind of editing do you want to use the external audio editor for? You may be able to do everything you want within Sonar. Which version of Sonar are you using?

Okay... I'll expand. I have Sonar 8.5 I have several vocal takes that I've chopped into several dozen clips. (Clips, however, don't replace the source audio so in the Audio folder there's only the original vocal takes. I'm unsure how to save the slip-edited clips I have now in the track.) Next, I want to take ALL THOSE CLIPS and edit them. Various things, like reversing the clip adding reverb and then reversing the clip again for that long tail intro. Stuff like that. I'd rather not have to save each clip, open each clip in an editor and save them again, only to have to reopen the clips and replace them all again.

Select a clip in a track and Select Bounce to Track in the menu and that will put the clip in a new track and it won't be slip edited anymore. You can do the "reverse/add reverb/reverse again" edit in Sonar. No need to use an external editor to do that unless you prefer the external reverb to what Sonar has. Speaking of Sonar Effects, the three Audio FX packages that Cakewalk used to sell (I had to buy mine) are free. http://www.store.cakewalk...ory.aspx?categoryID=40

Nice! Thanks for those links! Bounce to track looks like the same thing as what bvideo suggested: trimming. I have just tried 3 different editors including Audition and none of them will load/save the clip back into sonar once edited. How would you do the reverse/reverb/reverse in Sonar?

I used the regedit method as outlined in the Sonar Knowledgebase. No, I've never added anything there before... but the editors all open when I go to Tools and click them... they just don't open the highlighted track.

Digital Aura so... tell me how you edit audio in Sonar?? How would you do the reverse/reverb/reverse in Sonar? Well, that's not something I've used in the past but if I did I would probably use the reverse reverb as an introduction to the beginning of a phrase but not through the entire phrase. So, that in mind, here's what I'd do. I'd bounce just that phrase to another track. I'd split the clip at a point well before where the reversed reverb will be in front of the phrase (at least a couple of measures), and at a point at least a couple of beats past the end of the phrase. I'd delete the clips before and after the phrase. I'd reverse the clip using Process>Audio>Reverse. I'd hi-light the reversed audio starting at the last beat of the audio and continuing past that at least a couple of measures. I'd go to Process>Audio Fx and choose a reverb effect. I'd tweak the settings and use Audition to hear what it will sound like. I'd click OK to write the effect to the track. I'd split the clip at a point just past where the reverb effect ends and delete that part with no audio. I'd Reverse the clip again. This leaves me with the same audio but with a reverse reverb leading into the first part of the original phrase. This is a very general guideline and I would tweak all the settings so that the reversed reverb sat well in the track and blended seamlessly with the rest of the clip. I might even copy the reversed clip to another track which I could put the effect on and then use an envelope to blend in with the first reversed clip.

There are a few free reverse reverbs at KVR site, I downloaded the one called AUM and with a little tweaking it did it's thing. Might not be what you had in mind but it can do the Lead Zepplin tape print tru pretty good. Simply highlight the part you want to apply it to and render it. Sonars weak point is the lack of what I'd call a proper wave editor. You can't even pinpoint and adjust gain. Not sure why your files are not opening in the editor , but I've only ever used Wave Lab so not sure if the others work the same, it would seem to me they should, Might be the type of file ( 32 bit) is not supported in the free download editors.

I'll check out the AUM effect and thank you Cactus. Chappel: that's quite the work around, but I suppose that works. Unfortunately, I want to apply it somewhat to each new stanza and working in a dedicated wav editor would be better.

Unfortunately, I want to apply it somewhat to each new stanza and working in a dedicated wav editor would be better. It took a lot longer to type out how to do it than it did to actually do it. Different people have different ways of doing things. I hope you get your problem with the external editor in Tools sorted out. I can't help you with that. Maybe if you copied and pasted (or posted screencaps of) exactly what you added to the registry it would help clear that up. Here is how mine looked after manually adding Adobe Audition.

Mine looks the same, except in the MenuText string I was told to enter an & (Ampersand) before Adobe Audition... don't know why.

Have your tried audacity? http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ I'm just downloading it and will install and let you know if it shows in tools menu. I've never had to do anything weird, Wave lab just shows there. So stay tuned I'll be back in a bit. Adobe Audition is a $399 program and I see there some free downloads but not sure how that pans out, I tend to avoid those sites that offer "free" downloads. In the end they get a bunch of info from you and you never get the goods. I love Wave Lab and have been with them for a long time. I've spent more time on that software than anything else on a PC. I record all my stereo live stuff. Edit and everything in Sonar goes through it twice. It's not cheap @ $499, but for me it's been the best investment yet. There is a free trial but you will have to have an account with them first. So if you own a copy of Cubase you can try it for free. http://www.steinberg.net/...b_7_trial_version.html

Well here's what happened. I downloaded and installed Audacity on my Netbook which I have a bare bones set up and Sonar 7 P. It does not show in the tools menu. I rebooted a few times etc. No loss because I opened the software and poked around with a wave file. There's no way I could use this after Wave Lab. It looks very basic. But I'm not sure why Sonar recognizes Wave Lab and not Audacity. Maybe if the editor was already installed before Sonar, Sonar would find it upon install. I think I always install Wave Lab first.
