so all of you producers play on some instrument?

just curious what a percentage of pro producers or sound engineers actually play instrument as well.
I guess the only requirement are a good ears and knowing your craft for an interview :)
Although it's hard to imagine when working with sound not trying to produce something by yourself as well.

Guitar (acoustic, electric, bass, pedal steel, dobro, etc...), drum programming and limited keyboards. However - whenever budget permits I much prefer to bring in people that are "better for the part".

What I play well: bass guitar, guitar (acoustic and electric), trumpet, ukulele, vocals (not necessary traditional melodic types), flageolet, jaw harp, drum pads and some flute thing I've had since I was a kid

What I can make my self understood with: vocals (the more traditional version), keys (practicing like crazy), tuba, trombone, English horn, double bass, drums

Planning to learn during my life: Oboe, other types of guitars, violin

Of course, I want to be better at it all

some play some dont..and the producer im thinking of plays guitar
and is also the writer for 10 albums, so yes it helps if you play a
    fairly well.

Although it's hard to imagine when working with sound not trying to produce something by yourself as well.

Engineer's place in the studio is very clear, set up a working mix ..track ..and do what the Producer tells you, ive seen many
a engineer get fired, they are not the creative process, just part of the big picture, but after 10 yrs  and with a few hit's you might get some status

Well I am a Digital Musican, I play, Guitar (Bass,Lead,Rythem), I can bash the piano (program synths and sounds), I sing and I play ethnic flytes ann whistles and recorders (Bass, Alto).  The most important instrument I play though and this is the paradigm shift everyone has to get their heads around, is my DAW.

The DAW is a multi-instrument.  This means inside my DAW the possibilites are endless, I want to be a violin player, I can, I want to be a drummer, I can.  The trick to being a Digital Musican and being a virtuoso on the DAW, you have to understand the basics of both of the above mentioned instruments.

IMHO, a good engineer or producer has to be able to play some sort of instrument, this gives them a better understanding of what they are trying to capture and a better understanding of the artist, they are trying to communicate with.

    Peace Ben

I'm not nearly as proficient on piano as guitar, but for the tunes I write, I like to play my own parts.....alot of piano players overplay and just step on parts I don't want stepped on.

Vocal, guitars, keyboards/synths, sound design, songwriting, professional club and party DJ, professional copywriter.

I never had an opportunity to learn playing or singing in school (childchood in time of State of War in Poland), and I don't feel like "professional" vocalist, musician or producer.
It's more like passion ('cause it's too expensive for just a "hobby")
