solo piano "The Bridge To Somewhere" - original (?)
solo piano cd coming out, with this original. At least, I think it's original? Have you heard this theme before somewhere? Like in the first minute and a half . . . I'd sure appreciate some musicology up in here! "The Bridge to Somewhere" https://soundcloud.com/songsbytom-com would love comments on mix, balance, reverb, and anything else as well . . . would help tremendously as I am hatching this cd soon! If I have reinvented someone else's song, I'd drop this one off the CD . . . cheers, and thanks, -Tom

The opening first two phrases come from Rocky Horror Picture Show, which in turn come from something I can't remember from the 60's. There are a few other melodic phrases that come from other sources, but as a whole, I think you are okay. It's certainly pretty! Regards, Dan

Dan, you da man, I found "super heroes" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I've unconsciously copped the the first four notes of melody! thanks, that's what I get for those late nights in my misspent youth . . . now I just have to change it a little, or drop it off the CD. Hmmmmm. thanks, -Tom

Hey Tom, lovely piece, and beautifully played. I thought I might have heard some melodic hints of Sinatra's "My Way" towards the beginning, but overall I think you're okay.

Beautiful playing. Not sure 4 notes makes a difference, but it might to you. There's nothing new under the sun. As jazzers we're used to playing variations, no? You could retroactively claim it *based on a theme from...* You know as jazzers that we're almost expected to included paraphrases and quotes of famous passages of well known players (coltrane, ellington etc) not sure rocky horror qualifies! :D:D:D:D

Tom, Very nice piece of music. Reminds me a bit of John Barry's style ...with a little Billy Joel added in for good measure.... If you're not too pressed for time with your deadline, a little orchestration toward the middle around 1:50 would be interesting. Great listen.

Very lovely. Vaguely recalls 'A Time for Us' for me, but I just listened to that old chestnut and it is not too similar. Honestly I like your tune much better than that one. I wish Billy Joel was still writing stuff like this.

Very, very nice Tom, ol pal. Great playing and feel. Of course I listen to everything with my producer hat on...so I picture this as a theme to a movie and I'd bring in the warmth of strings at 1:07 and then back out when you start introducing the major chord at the beginning of the motif. Which I think is repeated too many times. I see it in four distinct sections...first, piano only stating the minor theme...then adding the strings and under pinning of other instruments (Rhodes?) then back to piano for the shorter major section but again adding strings toward its end...then a shift to a smoky acoustic bass, drums and piano jazz trio when you start riffing on the minor theme...then subtly bringing in the sad strings again at the end. And I'll expect that on my desk by 5 o'clock this afternoon;-) In other words it should be like sex...like most all emotional songs should.

Does your producer hat look like a big sombrero donut? :) Ha, loved your post, I totally agree it could swing towards the end as a jazz trio, brush snare-type deal. That's a future cd for me I think. More like 2022 than 5 o'clock today, sadly. wait, let me go check my lottery tickets . . . be right back. -Tom

It's easy to get big ideas of arrangement when hearing this kind of stuff... add strings and woodwind and maybe a harp... no, don't. This piece is great by itself - lovely side theme at 1:33 by the way! - don't change it, I think it's perfect.

Nice touch on that piano Tom, I would leave it alone, after all there are only 13 notes . Well worthy of a for your playing alone.

Hey esoul, this is cool. I once read a book by Leonard Bernstein, and he spent a lot of time outlining all the famous pieces of music that started out with the same four notes of "How Dry I Am." All the greats used them. If Dan the Man hadn't used his encyclopedic mind to discern the first 4 notes, I would never have known. Jesse Q. Screed

Excellent playing and very well recorded. I think the tone is perfect for this piece.
Loved it all the way to the very last note. I wouldn't worry about the similarities to other tunes.

+1 to the above... great piece! Was this mostly played or programmed? Just curious because it comes across so well - the alternate melancholy and jazzy bits are so cool and well done. FWIW I also hear "familiar" lines weaving in and out, but that made absolutely no difference to the emotion of the piece.

Lynn, many thanks for the listen and the thumbs up! SteveC, thanks for the "sound quality" kudos, I sweated that a lot. It's me playing it into the computer, using the Pearl by Impact Soundworks. 99% played straight in, but I will go fix an occasional timing issue with midi if I have to. If you listen closely, I left a lot of mistakes in! I have played piano in restaurants two nights a week for the past 15 years, so the "playing" part doesn't worry me anymore - the real challenge is getting the vst and the effects and all to "sound like a piano" . . . or maybe close . . . Guitarhacker, many thanks for the time and the comments. Jsaras, thanks, I wish I could play better stride, it's really hard for me sometimes! cheers, -Tom

Just did, thanks for the heads up. I know there's another thread in the Software forum I guess, but you know what? Would I like to have it? Yes. Do I already have a lot of those sounds? Yes. Will it play as responsively as Pianoteq? Then I'd buy it immediately. However, I think 50% of the greatness you are hearing is Spectresonics marvellous effects - chorus, reverb, etc. The video didn't include the players who came in and said "yeah but I already have these sounds with some other vst's or Kontakt" Still I want it. Is it a 5 million GB download? When is it on sale? Cheap bustard? Yes. Until then, I'm going to try to hate it. :)
