[solved] where have the midi layers gone ?

working myself through the anomalies of X1.

in previous sonar versions the midi tracks would behave more or less like audio tracks.. they were visible as layers.. now they are only visible as a small piano roll view.
I've tried all kinds of right clicks to change the behaviour (ok, I forgot to [ctrl]-right click.. (little joke)), and although there was an option to refresh/show layers it didn't work. (instead my whole project got messed up.. deleted half of my midi-tracks and parts of my audiotracks.., took me quite some time to restore them from previous saved versions)
So how do you cut, slice, trim, mute PART of your midi-tracks ? where's the secret ?
thx
frank

I don't know what you are talking about midi layers? So I won't bother with that. How do you cut, slice, trim, mute? Well, the smart tool does everything. One of the things I set out to do before I spent time with X1 was to read the manual. There were a few major areas I only focused on (screensets, automation, the smart tool). Trust me, it is worth it to spend a little time in the manual, especially learning things like the smart tool.
That said, if you have the smart tool selected you can Split a clip by holding down alt + mouse click, this will bring up the little scissors icon where you can split your clips. Or, you can right click on the arrow under the wrench icon (edit) and select split.
You can mute entire clips by right clicking on the clips and selecting the "mute clips" option. If you want to mute certain notes in the Piano Roll View than you need to bring up the tool bars while in the piano roll view (middle mouse button), scroll over to the last icon that says "erase", right click on the arrow under that icon and select mute. You can then left click the notes you want to mute.

    ok, thank you..
I know how to use those tools.. and I might read more of the manual although I am just searching for a button to switch between layer-view and piano roll-view.
I am not at my daw right now and couldn't find a screenshot of what I am seeing.
In previous sonar versions you could toggle (in track view) between layers and piano-roll view!
the midi-layer(s) just looked like standard audio track/layers!
Now I have a small keyboard on the left side of the midi track and an infinitive white guitar-tab-like horizontal line on which the midi notes lay.
just as if you'd view your midi-tack in the piano roll view.
In that mode there's no way of muting f.e. the chorus.
so how do you switch back to a standard midi-track-view(layer) ? (can it be so difficult to understand?)

In X1, you select the track and click on Layers-Show Layers.

To edit parts of tracks, you just highlight the section with the mouse pointer. You used to have to hold down alt, but I don't think that's necessary with X1's smart tool.

now they are only visible as a small piano roll view.

Sounds like you have the Edit Filters on those track set to Notes (formerly known as PRV Mode or Inline PRV), instead of Clips. You can only see layers with the Edit Filter (there's a listbox in each track header) set to Clips.

    brundlefly.. woaw..
I was about to give up on this one..
    but then:

(there's a listbox in each track header) set to Clips

took me a minute to understand what you were refering to, but then.. omg..
and then "for each track"... ok.. would be much nicer to have a global switch, but at least that "feature" hasn't gone..
    thank you!!!!!!!

I knew I should have said "drop-down" rather than listbox.

BTW, like other track controls, you can select multiple tracks and Ctrl-select a mode for the Edit Filter to apply to all selected tracks.
