sonar 7 plugins

Installed sonar 7. VC 64, session drummer, perfect space and possibly some others not around or in plugin manager. My big problem is options-global-vst has the scan options greyed out. In sonar 6 this is not the case and I can load in the sonar 7 plugins. Help!
I know there have been a couple similar threads, but nothing mentioning the disabled scanning in global options.

Thanks, Kbard

I don't know about 7 (because DHL has lost mine!) but in 6 I find that Tools - Cakewalk Plug-in Manager does not allow a scan to be started, but if I access the plug-in manager instead via Synth Rack - + - Soft Synths - Plug-in Layouts - Manage Layouts ... then I can initiate a scan. As you Americans say, "go figure"!

Just some thoughts for you to consider.

Have you done searchs for the VST DLL's to see if they are on your machine?

Have you checked to look for installation directories?

Have you checked the option part of the VST scan wizard?

    Hey, Keith,

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone here. I'm having exactly the same problem with Sonar 7 right now. None of the VST plugins show up, and when you go to Options::Global::VST Plugins, everything in VST Scan is grayed out; i.e., neither of the buttons is active. I don't think the problem is unique to Sonar 7 though, because I was having exactly the same problem when I initially installed Sonar 6. Reinstalling all the VST plugins didn't help at all there, but I finally got Sonar 6 to recognize the VST plugins by reinstalling that version of the actual program. I think it took 2 or 3 tries though; so, maybe reinstalling Sonar 7 a time or two will do the trick. I'm hoping so. Anyway, I found your post while looking for some way to go in and surgically fix this, as opposed to just installing things over and over. I'd like to know exactly what's happening and how to fix the problem--not just work around it. Anyway, good luck!

Hi Den, I'm still at it. I've tried installing, uninstalling several times in different ways. For the time being I'm back to using 6 with the extra plugins of 7. 6 has no problem scanning. I'm glad to know i'm not the only one. I've tried everything I could think of. Tomorrow is a new day I dont think tech support is open on Saturdays though. let me know if you figure anything out. Does anyone know if there is a possibility that my software could be faulty. Thanks

I don't think it's faulty software--just something amiss in the installation. Based on some of the other posts around the forum here, I double checked whether I could possibly "Scan VST Plugins" from the plugin manager, but the button is grayed out there also. Something additional I do while troubleshooting this particular problem is to run Registry Mechanic from PC Tools in between re-installs. I always see a bunch of new errors after a Sonar install. Anyway, yeah, I'll let you know if I figure anything out. As I mentioned, I've already solved this once for version 6, and that version is still working; so, I do have faith.

Just for the record, here's one more symtom of the problem: I have a project that I created in Sonar 6 that uses a bunch of VST plugins--multiple instances of VC-64, for example. When I try to open that project in Sonar 7, I get a series of identical dialog boxes all with the same title "VST Plug-In Error." The text of the message in the box is always "The following VST plug-in failed to load:" as if it's then going to list a specific VST plugin but none is ever listed.

    Hey, Mike,

I don't know about Keith, but I accepted all the defaults for the install location. I've just been reading about a possible incompatibility between the Sonar implementation of VST and Izotope Ozone 3. Keith, do you by any chance have Ozone installed on your system?

Yes everything is in the computer. Just no way to get it into Sonar 7. The option button in the plugin manager is disabled regardles of what I do. When I open s6 everything works fine, but this S7 is killin me.

If you start the plugin manager external to Sonar, does it behave normally? It should be in Program Files/Cakewalk/Shared Utilities as an independent exec. (At least it is for my S6; haven't installed S7 yet.) If it behaves normally, which I expect it will since it does so from within S6, check the date, etc. I'm guessing you'll find it predates the S7 installation, and they may be incompatible. Perhaps the S7 installation somehow failed to replace it with a newer version.

Just a shot in the dark, based on a possibly related problem I just had. I noticed that launching the plugin manager from the (S6PE) Tools menu started an older version of it, but launching from the appropriate Insert Softsynth submenu gave the newer version. Turns out this is because the registry entry for the Tools menu, which seems to be independent of Sonar version, had the path for the older Plugin Manager, not for the newer one. (I still had the older one in a subfolder under Cakewalk/Shared Utilities. Earlier today, I happened to run it external to Sonar, and that apparently was sufficient for it to establish itself as the path in the Tools menu. Took me a few hours to track this down )

Thankyou Ron, I think you might have something there. At this point I have uninstalled everything cakewalk and sonar, making sure I uninstalled the plugin manager and vst scanner also. Then reinstalled sonar7. In the shared utilities folder the scanner works fine, and I can see its picking up all the missing plugs. Without even opening sonar, I open the plugin manager to see if the plugs are there and they are not. Opening sonar, I just have the same problems I have been having. So the scanner seems to work outside of sonar7 but not inside. And the plugin manager even outside of sonar7 is not picking up the scanned plugins. Thanks, Im beyond desperate at this point.

The same problem for me here:

I received my Sonar 7 yesterday, so I uninstall my previous Sonar 6, clean the registry and installed Sonar 7, but never could see its new plugins for mastering. I tried to run a rescan of VST plugins but this option is not available in my installation.

I made a second installation in my second machine (for Teleported plugins) without uninstall Sonar 6 on this machine. The program runs well.
This is where my problem starts because I do not know why I can not make Sonar 7 work well on my primary PC running Windows XP SP2. It seems like I have an issue in the configuration folders and I do not know how to solve this.

After this I uninstall Sonar 7 from my primary machine, reinstall Sonar 6 and then reinstall Sonar 7 but nothing: I can not see those 3 new plugins for mastering and I can not run VST rescan because such feature is not visible.

I thankyou GWP so very, very much.

+1 on the thanks, GWP! That thread mighta saved me a couple hours hacking around the registry. Gotta remember the shift "jump start" from now on. (Also gotta remember to do my searching using the search function at the top of the thread, not the bottom. )

Carlos, hope it works for you too.

    Hey, GWP,

Sorry I'm a day late/dollar short here (I've been at an all-day songwriting seminar) but yeah, I just tried the miracle cure and had my miracle. Thank you so much. Keith, thank you for making this a class-action kind of thing and getting the attention we needed to get this resolved.

Finally, I just wanted to elaborate on that iZotope Plug-ins thing I mentioned briefly earlier. It has nothing to do with this particular problem, but I didn't want to leave anybody hanging who was wondering what that was all about. That particular issue was with iZotope Plug-ins in SONAR 7 x64. The source of the information is the SONAR 7 read me file (ReadMe.RTF). Here is what it says:

iZotope Plug-ins Hang x64 VST Scan
    -----------------------------------------
iZotope Plug-ins will hang the VST Scan process in SONAR x64. To launch SONAR successfully, these plug-ins must be removed from any of SONAR's VST Scan paths.

This issue will be addressed in a future update.

Once again, thanks to all of you guys. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go do some work in Sonar 7...since it finally works!

Enjoy what's left of the weekend!
