sound cards

If I have an M-Audio 2496 PCI card do I still need to get a sound card like a realtek chip or can I just have the 2496 or will my UA-25 EX replace my realtek chip.

the m-audio 2496 AND teh UA-25EX are both soundcards and you do not need another.  in fact if you try to use the 2496 and the UA-25EX at the same time you'll have problems.  they have different clocks and you will lose sync between tracks.  you only need one of them at a time.

The Maudio is much better than the relteck..... so I would use it. As Beagle said... only use one card for recording...the same one for in and out.

I have 2 cards..... the factory and an external. I set up my DAW to default to the external...always. This allows me to use the external for recording, and at the SAME TIME.... I can have my editor open and using my factory card to be checking the exported files....or even running a totally different audio program.

However, for recording...ONE AT A TIME.

removal of "the old card" is impossible in laptops.    The card is often built right in to the MB, even in some of the newer desktops this is the case.   The best you can do at times is disable it in software.

Some things to take note of...

    1. Windows can have more then one soundcard/driver installed with no problem.
    2. Sonar does not use the sound settings in the Windows control panel. You can pick the driver you want to use.
    3. It's a good idea to set Windows to use a different sound card driver then the one Sonar uses so having more then one is really a good thing.
    4. It's best to set Sonar to use only one of the sound cards installed. Uncheck the other drivers in Sonar Options/Audio.

So the idea is that a new sound card doesn't need to "replace" an existing one you are just installing another one.

by the way, the m-audio 2496* will give you better low latency performance if you are using siftsynths to make music.

lol how I typed 2595 is beyond me as I know this cards name by heart and of course what the name means lol- typo corrected
