sound forge 9?

Anyone using soundforge 9?

im curious how it stacks up as a mastering suite.

i know that 9 comes with a lite version of izotope, but i was wondering that since i own the full version, if i could use that with it instead of the lite one that comes with it.

iv read that it supports vst's so it shouldnt be a problem, but i was just wondering.

currently i just use the ozone plugin on the master buss in sonar, but its a pain opening up huge sonar just to master a single file.

SF9 is great, esp with sonar. Yes - you can use any vst in SF9.

    You're in an amazing state.

    So stay there.

Not a SF user here, but I do use the comparable Adobe Audition and originally used it for mastering. To make a long story short, after much experimentation I ended up using SONAR for mastering. The only thing I gave up was Audition's superior dither, but after adding Ozone that was no longer an issue.

I took a look at Sound Forge, and it looked pretty good. But ultimately I decided not to give any money to Sony, as I am still incensed over the rootkit debacle. Ever since then I've maintained a personal boycott of Sony products.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

While it was jacked up, the rootkit debacle has nothing to do with Soundforge or Sony's other production software.
I have been using SF with Ozone 3 for several years now, it works great. It also integrates nicely into SONAR. It's my primary editor, though I do tend to install Ozone on SONAR's bus lately for "mastering" work. I then send it to SF for trimming and using CD architect.
The fact that SF9 comes with CDA and Sony Noise Reduction make it a real bargain for me.

    Flipper,

That's old news, but so typically Sony. Let me tell you another story....

Long ago and far away, in a land known as Internet 1, meaning about 15 years ago when clients were coming in the door wanting to know what was this thing called "the World Wide Web", we came upon the first Sony website. On the home page it contained a video message from the president of Sony.

Remember, this was in 1994, when most people were lucky to have a 2400 baud modem, but being a pioneer of the industry, we had an ISDN line that ran at a whopping 128Kbit/sec (for only $400 a month!), when it worked, so we invested the hour or so to download this important message. It was a large file, I can't remember how large.

When we ran it, we discovered that video was, of course, in Japanese. The rootkit deal was a demonstration of the same kind of visionary thinking that can only be made by a room full of over-paid 'yes men'.

These are the same people that brought us betamax, but surprisingly enough, they do get it right once in a while. I still enjoy my Trinitron.

The rootkit debacle, as insolent as it was, was the product of Sony's BMG division. Remember that Sound Forge was formerly a product of Sonic Foundry, an excellent company which was bought by Sony and now is Sony Media Software. It seems to me that Sony didn't mess with the Sonic Foundry formula too much, and let them continue to develop the product. I wouldn't write it off just because it is owned by Sony.

I have SF8, and used it for my last project, I liked it. So upgrade to 9? From 8? Compelling reasons?

I actually bought SF9 and use it, but given the choices available today, I'd proably opt for Audition - my main peeve with SF is that it makes you apply effects destructively (with undo), whereas in Sonar and Audition you can stack them up and apply them at the time of bouncing. The big advantage is that if you need to go back and re-generate your mix, you can just plug the new mix into a mastering project in Sonar or Audition without manually reapplying any of the effects. If there's a way to do the same thing with SF9, I'd love to know about. As far as I'm aware - there isn't (short of scripting).
