space between led and sensor in compressor?

my joe meek channel has an optical compressor. when it comes in it really squashes the signal. if i push the light slightly further away from the optical sensor, will it make the compression smoother?

thx :)

You'd basically be adjusting the threshold a bit. It may change the knee shape slightly, but mostly the threshold.

That would not be a big percentage of the speed of light

hmm i dont think increasing the distance would do much but changing the angle of the led might do something, lay the led "off-axis" so to speak as lower level signals will not fully illuminate the led.

for a more psychedelic effect lay some gels from your par cans across the led to change the color. blue=mellow, red=angry, yellow=more french sounding

You're kind of thinking along the right lines, but as others have suggested, the results may not be entirely predictable.

The optical element basically works in relation to the intensity of the light it receives. Anything that canges the intensity of the ight on the optical element will change the way the compressor responds. Whether the change is a desireable one depends on a lot of things. I like and encourage this kind of tinkering, but only if the device isn't critical to your everyday workflow.

    Cheers.
