speed comping and automatic track soloing in X3
I'm trying to get to grips with speed comping in X3. When I select a clip and turn on speed comping the comped track is automatically solo'd. I'd actually prefer it not to be solo'd and just hear it in conjunction with the rest of the mix. I know I can use dim solo, but I don't want to hear an attenuated version of the other tracks I just want to hear them exactly as they are in the mix. I know I can also manually deselect solo on the comped track after I've gone into speed comp mode but the moment I move onto the next clip solo is automatically re-enabled. This is driving me mad! Is there a way of getting speed comping to NOT automatically solo the comped track? Surely I can't be the only one who wants to work like this!

Select all other tracks and Ctrl+Shift+Solo one of them to enable solo override on all of them. EDIT: Oops. Nevermind. Doesn't work. Interesting problem.

Thanks anyway for the suggestion brundlefly, and thanks for the Edited update, I had been trying your suggestion without any luck! I find it's hard to believe it's just me who is struggling with this. A zero db option on the dim solo gain in the preferences would be the obvious fix - but that ain't there!

That was my first thought, too, but the logic of that wouldn't be immediately obvious. Probably better to have a special Speed-Comping mode where auditioning doesn't mute other tracks.

Only workround I can think of is select the-6dB option in dim solo and then drop the comping track level by 6dB. That'd work wouldn't it?

Hmmm. I actually thought Brundlefly's suggestion worked. I know when I have done this I ran into the same problem as the OP but found a way to make it work. I thought it was as simple as selecting all the tracks, but maybe there is more to it. I can't recall my exact steps, but I will check when I get back to my studio tonight if not answer is found before then.

Brundelfly - I think I'll stick the zero db option on dim solo in as a feature request and see what happens. FastBikerBoy - what you suggests does work and that is in fact what I'm doing at the moment. It's just a faff to have to keep setting and unsetting the levels of the comped track and the master bus. neirbod - if you do manage to throw more light on things I'd really appreciate it. Grem - "what is speed comp'ing"; in x3, after you've got a few takes in take lanes, you can split it up into segments, select any one of the segments then hit shift + spacebar and playback will start with looping on that segment. While it is looping you can use the up and down arrow to audition different takes, once you've found the one you are happy with then 'enter' will promote it to the comped track. Forward and backward arrows will move you to adjacent segments to repeat the process. It seems to have a lot of potential, unfortunately it goes ahead and solos the comped track for you and that particular 'feature' is driving me mad!

It took a little work to get my head around "speed comping", but once I started using it (after watching a video on implementation), I quite like it.

Thanks for the replies. But when I am comp'ing, I wanna hear the rest of the track too! Oh well, I'll give it a whirl and see. Maybe it's best this way.

I tried to find out how I did it before, but with no luck. Either I mis-remembered how I did it, or there was some change in X3c. Regardless, I agree 100% that for speed comping to be effective we need some way to easily listen in the context of the other tracks. Why automatically solo at all? If I want to solo a track I can do that easily. I would prefer that all tracks play by default just like normal behavior.

Huh... that's a weird way for them to set things. Is there not a setting in Preferences or the Track View Options to disable that? One thing you could try is before a comping session multi select and solo the rest of the tracks. If they get unsoloed automatically maybe the Exclusive Solo option could be used somehow to keep them audible (but I've never used it and forget exactly how it functions but it's worth a look). Cheers.

Using audition mode for speed comping relies on audition mode's solo (which it's always done). We went above and added the dim solo option to let you hear in context. If you fully want to hear in context, then use the mouse and click the segments you want while playing. It's not quite as fast as the keyboard, but it's a way to accomplish what you're after.

Hi Keith, This does work, but unless I am doing something wrong as soon as I select other tracks to hear I lose the ability to use the arrow keys to move among the takes/clips in the auditioned track. It seems like a better solution would be to simply use the standard "rules" for soloing - if I want to hear just the auditioned track I can use the solo button on that track before I play back in audition mode. Otherwise, I hear all the tracks that would play normally. I would be curious to hear if others feel the current system is preferred for some reason, because I honestly don't see the benefit.

Hi Keith, ... I would be curious to hear if others feel the current system is preferred for some reason, because I honestly don't see the benefit.
I don't know about it being preferred but when I'm trying to decide which take or part of a take I want to use it makes sense to me for everything else to be at a lowered volume or even muted. The times I've used speed comping the dim solo was adequate for listening in context, I never even thought about wanting it louder. That said I wouldn't be against an option to hear the other tracks at full volume. Dan

Agree with everything here. In fact its sort of stopped me from using speed comping which could be great otherwise. 0db dim solo option fixes it very simply.

I personally like the way it automatically goes to exclusive solo while speed comping..to me thats the essence of the objective.. I have also used the dim solo so if its an easy fix to make a dim solo 0dB option, can i also have -24dB?.. :D

Same here... I guess it's a workflow/usage thing - I tend to comp while listening to the finer details of that track, so I want to hear it without a whole lot of anything else audible. That said, a 0dB DimSolo would seem to be a simple option to cater to both sides.

I kind of never understood why the Dim Solo level can't be set at whatever level the user wants. I'm sure there is a reason (difficult to code?) but being able to set it at like -3.7db or -14.2db would be neat. Maybe even have a little fader in there and an audition feature so you can get the exact level you need. Even cooler would be having an easily hideable Dim Solo bus right after the Master in the Console so you could mess with it there without opening Preferences. Having it as a bus too could mean you could put limiters or other dynamic processors on it to tame the signal for the comping process if need be without having to mess with the actual mix. Perhaps a bit extravagant but it'd be cool.

So I did a little more testing and discovered that the speed comping feature has (in my opinion) very odd behavior that complicates things. It behaves in very different ways depending on if "dim" is selected before speed comping starts or after. Select dim before speed comping - Select the track(s) you want to audition and click shift+space. On each selected track the solo light turns green and we hear all the tracks with the non-soloed ones attenuated. CTRL clicking on a track will add or remove it from the "soloed" group as indicated by both the volume and the solo button. This is all quite logical and effective. Start speed comping without dim enabled - You hear just whatever tracks were selected before hitting CTRL+space. So far so good. But "solo" is not lit on any track. Why? Now click dim. Nothing changes. All the non-soloed tracks are silent. Solo lights are still all off. So the bottom line for me is - click dim first. Not doing so likely explains why some of us had trouble and others did not with this feature. But I can't help but wonder if this differing behavior is intended or a bug. Perhaps there is a logical reason for this, but it seems unnecessarily complicated to my little brain.

I am curious if the behavior I detailed above is typical. Can anyone else confirm it? It is possible that I could have something strange going on in my system. If it is typical, can anyone explain why such a system is logical or useful? I really don't get it but it is certainly possible I am missing something.
