static when recording mic??

I finally got everything to work! but now for some reason because this wasnt a problem when I re-installed my cakewalk

when I hit record- the mic or something picks up this horriblr static? whether I speak on the mic or not, there is a loud static in background, I tried all the knobs on my Interface but nothing seems to get rid of this? what is it picking up for noise?

the distance for my voice to mic is LOW as it can get so I doubt its exterior sound

    Describe your gain stage for the mic, from start to finnish. Include everything your mic travels through. when your sone, start checking each piece in your gain stage and start ruling them out one by one. We cant do that here because we cant touch your stuff. so, i would start checking your stuff, you already know ware to look

    the mic itself + cable are BRAND NEW
    it works 100% just 2-3 weeks ago, havent touched it since

    all I did was delete and re install my Cakewalk, thats it!

    Okay:

    Mic, cable out into Interface, interface connected to laptop and Mixer, mixer connected to Receiver, grooveboxm synthesizer

    what made you do that? I'm assuming some catastrophic failure?

    in your list of equipment, I don't see a sound card - are you using the onboard soundcard of your laptop? if so, change to MME driver mode: OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = MME
    close SHS
    restart SHS
    let the wave profiler run

    Im assuming the interface is his sound card Beagle
    when I hit record- the mic or something picks up this horriblr static?

    what kind of mic pre-amp do you have in your sound card(interface) I would check it with another mic. It could be bad inputs or it could be thousands of things??? start replacing everything in the chain, one by one. Thats how i resolve all my issues regarding these matters. Try a different outlet, try a ground lift in the same outlet.

    I missed that, CJ. but he doesn't have his "interface" listed in his equipment or in his post. so, flowmaster - what kind of interface do you have? and ignore my ealier post about MME - that's only applicable for onboard soundcards.

    Hey thanks for response!!

    M-Audio Interface connected to laptop

    the mic worked and recorded fine before - the reason I re installed the Cakewalk was because I had problems recording not realizing I had to switch over the audio driver to get it to work, but now it all works except for the mic - But also when i rip music to the cakewalk, it sounds ****ty quality too...I am thinking the internal sound card must be junk? Can I download ASIO to help this problem??

    as for the mic - im not sure- its all brand new, the mic is MXL 990 recording mic and cables are brand new as well :) thanks!

    the onboard sound card will cause you distress. i advise disabling it in the control panel and using your m-audio external as your sole sound card. you'll probably need to change to ASIO driver mode after you've disabled the onboard card. ASIO4ALL will not do you any good with the m-audio card and should not be installed on your system with the m-audio card. the m-audio card comes with good ASIO drivers - use what's already there, just disable the onboard card and you should be OK.

    FM,
    Do you have the phantom power turned on? Or even available on the interface? That MXL 990 is a condenser mic. You'll get tons of static if the power is off.

    the specs don't say anything about phantom power on the fasttrack pro.

    but you've listed a Eurorack Mixer - 99% of those have phantom power - which model do you have? you'll need to run the mic thru some input somewhere that has phantom power.

    MX 602A Euro Mixer - real basic and small

    the mic goes directly into the Interface and the interface is connected to my laptop, and the interface/mixer are connected

    are you telling me I need to plug the mic to the Mixer instead? not the interface?

    yes - condensor microphones need phantom power. your fast track doesn't have phantom power, but your mixer does. it needs to go to the mixer first to get phantom power.

    I had a similar problem.
    My MXL 990 was occasionally picking up 60 Hz hum when installed on one of my mike stands.

    Solutions: grounding the stand.
    I believe there was a static energy buildup o n insulated stand.

    Yes, I know!
    Grounding problems are not going anywhere as long as we keep using cables to connect
