studio projects vtb-1 or m audio dmp3

studio projects vtb-1 or m audio dmp3 , i know both aren't the greatest but with my budget this price range is all i can afford and i desperately need a mic preamp. which do you think is the better model or is there another in this range.

I haven't tried the dmp3 but I have the vtb-1 which I'm pretty happy with. It shines as a solid state pre, but it's also nice to have the tube blend for a different color. It gets pretty good reviews considering the price.

I'll second the VTB1 , I think it is very clean sounding and quiet but can be wound up if you want it to be.I ercently tried running a nylon string and an acoustic through it via piezo pickups and both sounded excellent..its all how you tweak it..

I have a DMP3 and like it a lot. I got it several years ago and it has worked well. Over at homerec.com (if you can slog thru all the "stuff") it is generally thought to be the best under $450 preamp out there. In addition, since it is two channel mono, it can be used to do a vocal mic and a guitar mic at the same time, etc. It is also good for running stereo keyboard outs into a recorder.

I mostly use it for vocals with either a Shure KSM27 or a Studio Projects TB-1 tube mic, and it makes very good vocals for me. I do, however, run the output into an RNC compressor setup as a limiter so I don't get overs going into my D1600.

These are all good options for the price point, and so is the ART TPSII - especially if you replace the crappy Chinese tube with something better, like an RCA. What can I say, I like my ART just fine but YMMV.
