subwoofer matching

I have a lack of low end in my system. others will testify to this as well. I Am wondering however if this subwoofer in the link is a suitable match to my Alesis M1 Active MKII's? yes it is 100.00 more than the Alesis monitors themselves but i feel the need for a sub in this studio. bitflipper, i think owned a set of mkii's, stuffed a sock in one port.. also maybe had a matching sub????? but i could not find an Alesis model...so if you see this bit, please let me know what you used..

thx

Also, since I'm running out of my Delta card with a RCA pair to my two speakers....what solution is available to route a sub woofer inline with it??? Maybe splitters on both the L/R main outs? one to left speaker, one to left sub in...vise versa...obviously one physical sub woofer with a stereo unbalanced RCA input. did i just solve this problem by the end of me typing it???? hmmmm...

I run my sub off the # 3 output of my interface if I'm not in SPDIF mode. My stupid M Audio card shares the 3/4 outputs with SPDIF.
SO when using SPDIF to my Yamaha 01v board I run it off the AUX 1 output and I set the send on post fader. I like to have some control over the level without leaving my chair.

try this sub. Polk Audio  I bought this one for my studio when the price was about $199 or so. I forget the exact price.  You should be able to find it for a decent price with just a bit of searching the net stores. Polk audio makes some decent speakers.

I have it in black with a metal speaker grill. I am very satisfied with it's performance.

I use Mackie MR-5 monitors and when I added this Polk sub it made a huge difference. I run all my speakers including the sub at about half power.

Unless you have some really high end boutique matched monitors, I think most decent subs will do a good job for you.

I run my sub from one of my Focusrite outputs. It can rattle your teeth if you want it to.

For what it's worth.... a lack of low end in your mix is probably indicative of having too much when you're mixing.... I would try re-positioning your monitors and or room treatment first. Having additional low end will likely make you want to mix in even less.

I use Alesis M1 Active MKII's, but I don't think I'd want a subwoofer when I mix...  Now adding one from the SUB outputs on my Mackie mixer for play back is something I'd like (if I end up living somewhere that can tolerate bass that is).

I don't use the sub when mixing per say- I just fire it up to check for runaway lo end, It will show in the sub. Because I'm used to exactly how much bass my NS 10M's  put out ,which is not much as we all know a sub is the only way to ferret it out.  So it depends on your monitors overall spectrum too. But nothing like a sub for kicking back and blasting a mix.

I do mix with the sub turned on,  then I turn it off and listen, and, I check the mix on headphones too.

I figure if I can get it sounding reasonable in all 3 scenarios, it should sound good on most of the playback systems it will ever hit.
