what kind of budget do you have? is a midi controller all you need or do you need a keyboard that will have its own sounds as well? how many keys do you want? do you want keyboard action or piano weighted action?

If you're a keyboard player... you wouldn't ask that question..... so.... When it comes to midi, any keyboard that outputs midi will work. Midi from a cheap $79.95 keyboard is the same as midi from a $3500 workstation keyboard.... for all practical purposes. Find a keyboard that you like... feel of the keys... number of keys...I recommend a minimum of 61 keys or 5 octaves. That will let you do all you need to do. I have a non-weighted 61 key synth. I've seen keyboards for less than $100... but up around $300 to $500 the quality improves....durability and stuff like that. Go visit a store and play a few.

Right. Try some out. If you just want to utilize software synthesizers, you may only need a MIDI controller, which is just the keys and a few knobs, but makes no sounds at all. It has to be connected to a computer or sound module to make sounds. MIDI keyboards have their own synthesizers inside, so you can play them anywhere you have power; you don't need a computer. Yamaha, Casio and other manufacturers make cheap, easy to use keyboards. Just make sure that it has a USB MIDI port or MIDI connectors. Of course, you'll also need very low latency to use soft synths in real time, otherwise you'll hear a long delay from when you press the key until you hear the sound of the soft synth.

for a few bucks you can buy a program that helps you learn the basics on a piano/keyboard.

I am new to computer music myself. But not keyboards. For space though, I bought this Akai lpk25 to use with MC5 and it is great for its size. http://www.akaipro.com/lpk25 I have my other midi keyboards for anything more complex.

Cenobite, drop in to the Coffee House forum and introduce yourself to our contingent of UK folks, if you want. Some good people there.
