Well Fog, they are the only country to hold a World Series with only one contry playing????

Briton and the old dominions still produce the best actors - period. Must be something they put into the water. Sorta like music - the British invasions from the Beatles to the Sex Pistols really shook thing up on this side of the pond. All out of porportion to relative population. Or like Germans and their generals - not more but better overall quality. Glad they haven't been utilizing that lately.

Never thought of that before...I guess that means we hold the record for longest winning streak in professional sports. Something to be proud of.

Anyway - Congratuations to the Islanders on mopping up the Oscars!

Don't get too excited. I think the US public is just coming to the realization that 80% of what comes out of Hollywood is junk...

Keith its more funny.. in the 70's 80's 90's etc... US basically had it sown up with films...
and the US , people liked some of the british tv shows.. monty python etc

last time brits did well at oscars was chariots of fire.. that was 84 or something..

now we do ok at movies, and not so good with the tv shows.. I mean yep you get the odd export , the office etc.. but some of the remakes (e.g. life on mars... aggh!) I was glad to see some people like spooks there, now a US remake of that would be seriously ODD..hehe

the thing with slum dog, is that was made for £10 million.. $20 mill or so US... the Bradd Pitt it was up against.. cost TEN times that amount to make.

I've got a set of Hitchcock films to watch here 10+, my brother in law got them for his birthday and lent me them.. some I've seen before, but look how old they are.hehe

I think maybe it's partly to do with the investment side of film making, they want the returns. The UK film industry, tricky really.. I mean Hand Made films wouldn't have come about if it wasn't for George Harrison..

Channel 4 used to do a lot of film related stuff.. kinda like what HBO is to the US.

I guess I'm lucky here in the Boston area... lots of opportunities to find a good indie movie in the various "unaffiliated" movie houses in the area, which are typically reviewed and promoted in the local papers right alongside the big hollywood stuff... Sometimes I forget the quality movie I just saw is only playing in a handful of theatres in the whole country!
