the vs100 as standalone recorder
I haven't tried recording yet on the vs100, as a standalone unit, but I did get an 8 gig SDHC card today to use for it.
What I am concerned with though is i'm not sure how much I will to use it as such. It's a good idea-multi/swiss-knife type device, but in terms of quick and easy mixing and listening-not so sure there.
I used to have a simple Tascam 4-track. You put a tape in and recorded and could play it back and arm another track, play it back quickly, mix it fairly quickly as well. No EQ or tons of buttons and effects to worry about. Nice and simple. Now odds are you'd never get any of those recordings onto the radio, due to audio quality and noise probs, but still... Something kinda romantic about it! :)
The thing with the vs-100 though is as far as I know-you can't just listen to a whole song quickly or easily straight from the unit. You have to take your files and open them, edit in the software, etc.. That would be cool if Roland or Cakewalk had come up with a solution where you could build a song easily and quickly and play it all back-just like on the old 4-track. And not just listen to one file at a time. know what I'm saying? I miss that. I wish they had a "play all files or tracks" at once button-so you could HEAR your work quickly and easily. I know you can hook up and open or import the files and hear them all at once in the software, but it's just not the same.
I'll try it all out the same and maybe i'll actaully like it. Who knows. Just not what I'm used to. Still have a bunch of old tapes with songs or project songs from the old 4-track. So i'll prob get another one off Ebay sometimes just to be able to listen to them again. That simple little thing could sometimes capture the magic better than other ways.
