thoughts on the way down

Guys,

Rambling thoughts as we are headed to dead meat demise. Maybe not in the right forum, but who gives a fork.

Thank you Bitflipper for putting my post back to somewhere wherever it was deleted. Sorta gun shy with several posts conveniently disappearing when not following the party line. Threads locked for no explained reason. So much water under the dam as we crash and burn, and things will evolve elsewhere for all of us. Our collective and individual future is bright. May we somehow all stay in contact.

Some of you guys have been major ignorant jerks over the years that I’ve been with you. Only greater irritant is the times I have been a worse ignorant jerk.

I look at this as like being a family of siblings. Sometimes fighting and scratching each other’s eyeballs out, but the strength of family unity overrides momentary squabbles.

Hope any of you will forgive me for anything I have posted to offend over the years. Love hopes for your wellbeing and peace. Was always more important than temporary getting pissed off with any of you noble warriors.

About getting a new DAW.

If Sonar ain’t broke, will probably work far superior to what our founding patriarchs had many years ago. Shut down is no reason to panic. Those forking out for lifetime upgrades were burned, but such is the way of the world. Anyone surviving thru time has been there, done that.

Don’t have much inside info about Cake’s death, but feel it is likely nothing to do with the hard core Cake staff. You mods have irritated me on numerous occasions, but the intent was always stay nose to the grindstone and move forward. Lack of evidence, but feel that Gibson is possibly the bad guy shutting down something that deserves to survive.

If needing to move on to another DAW, would go with Reaper or Studio 1. My opinion only.

Some time ago, had an authorization crash with a DAW and lost all data in the middle of a session the client’s family had flown 15000 miles to realize. Had PowerTracks, Sonar Music Studio, Voyetra whatever, something else.

Trying to salvage lost time and data, fired up Reaper that was sitting on my disc but too dysfunctional to think about using for anything serious. Was immediately turned off by the illogical workflow. Piece of crap that doesn’t follow civilized protocol. Total junk. I can’t do any of the tasks in this weird anomaly of a pretend digital recorder.

Spent the weekend trying to understand where this upstart mutant was coming from.

Several hours into the frustration, there was a moment of clarity. The thing was both more solid against vst crashes and the intent, design was way beyond anything Protools, Cake, any of the rest. It was my mind, brain that was cement petrified against accepting a better way of getting the job done.

If looking for an alternative DAW that will be daily upgraded and supported, consider the Reaper. Forum support that is way beyond my understanding, but if you got questions, will fire back at you with lightning speed. Check it out.

Studio 1, major advancements that have only been begging years of feature requests with Sonar. Another worthy alternative.

Been doing Reaper for more than 10 years. If you are in a transition and up against a brick wall, please post frustrations. Blasphemy, but anything you can do in Sonar can be done in Reaper (and possibly better).

Love all you guys and girls (more the girls than the guys…)

John

anything you can do in Sonar can be done in Reaper (and possibly better).

Would appreciate your comments on;
  • ARA integration? (i.e. Melodyne)
  • Drum replacement?
  • VocalSync?
  • The potential for leveraging any technical experience and expertise in the SONAR community for user mods/influence the development of a feature set for a smoother transition/preferred ways of working. Won't have time to fully explore this point until next year, but noting the mention of some form of framework (SWS), JS and Python.
Suggestions for any references on the last topic also appreciated.

Studio One does ARA integration best, some say even better than SONAR does. Mixcraft bundles Melodyne Essential. I don't think Reaper does, but you can still use Melodyne in any DAW via ReWire or their own plugin, the same way we all did in SONAR pre-ARA.

As far as where to find the most SONAR ex-pats who can offer transition advice, Studio One seems to be where most of them have turned up. Although there have been a lot of Mixcraft converts recently.

Studio One includes an audio-to-MIDI feature, and does a pretty good job of AudioSnap-style transient detection. For myself, I'm content to use Superior Drummer's drum replacement feature, which will work in any DAW.

As for the claim that "anything you can do in Sonar can be done in Reaper (and possibly better)" - well, "anything" is an awfully big umbrella. The statement would be more defensible if the hyperbole was turned down a bit by substituting "most things" for "anything". You could make a long list of missing and poorly-implemented features for any DAW, including Reaper (peruse their FR list if you doubt it).

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
