Hi all my friends! =)

My name is Freddie and this thread is meant to be helpful & friendly POST. I thought that we all USERS could share and contribute to each other and share all the nice features/tricks we have found in SONAR. It doesn't need to be SONAR 8.5.1 either, it can easily be any other SONAR version that you actually use as a user...

Many functions are just hidden, that you accidentally find when you work with SONAR.
I would like to thank you all in advance that contribute to this thread. Thank you very much.. it's very kind of you, that you have taken your time, contribute and shared your findings to us all.

Thank you!

...that the new ARP function that is included in SONAR8.5.1 on tracks, can be bounced down to Midi-notes instead with just few mouse clicks? The new MIDI-Arp function is just great. You can bounce it down to midi-notes, like the same as with MIDI Step-Sequencer instead. I will give you an example.

The new Arp-function

  1. Use a MIDI track on a software instrument
  2. Activate ARP on that MIDI track so you can hear the ARP playing notes..
  3. Record something
  4. Now you get a new MIDI-clip in SONAR on that track. If you “double click” on it you will see “long notes” in “Piano-Roll”. When you hit “PLAY” in SONAR you hear the “Arp” is playing ,as long as the Midi notes are. Basically, the new “Arp-function”, plays actually many Midi-notes in the background, even if the Midi-data that you see in “Piano-Roll” in SONAR 8.5.1; is just long Midi-notes. This is how ARP works and that's the whole point with ARP, playing many notes..or a melody when you just pressing just one, or many keys on your keyboard.
  5. Close “Piano-Roll”
  6. Select the Arp-Midi-clip
  7. In Menu, Go to ----> “Edit” then go to ---> “Bounce to Clip(s)”.
  8. “Double click” on the “Arp Midi-clip” again, to open the “Piano-Roll”
  9. As you can see now, all ARP-notes that was playing in the background has been transformed to Midi-notes instead.... Now you can edit, change Midi-notes, Quantize the midi, Delete or Add new Midi-notes ...possibility are endless.
  10. And not just that, as you all can notice. After you “Bounced”- the “ARP-Clip” to a new MIDI-clip; the new included “Arp-function”; automatically switch “off” on that track too. So sweet!

Hope you like my first contribution to this thread.
Regards
Freddie

How to do a Clean install for all Cakewalk products:

 1)      Completely un-install all Cakewalk programs from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.

 2)      Next you will want to open the Run Command
             a) In Windows XP this can be done by going to Start | Run
             b) In Windows Vista this can be done by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’

 3)      At the prompt type regedit and click [OK].

***Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the File menu, Export Registry File.

 4)      Now delete the following Registry keys:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software

*Please note that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back these up separately if you like, using Options | Key Bindings,
Tools | SONAR Plug-in Manager, and Options | Colors.  Hit F1 in these views for detailed instructions on how to do this.

 5)      Open the 'Run' command again.

 6)      Copy and paste the following into the prompt:

 %appdata%

 7)      This will open your Application Data folder, right-click on the Cakewalk folder and choose ‘Delete’.

 8)      Navigate to the following directory and delete its contents:

 C:\Program Files\Cakewalk

 9)      Open the 'Run' command again and type ‘msconfig’ Click [OK] and then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens.

 10)   Uncheck all items listed, click [OK], then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.

 11)  At this point you can reinstall SONAR 8 and SONAR 8.5.

Well Darn Freddie...

This is pretty cool!
THANKS!

As I work on more complex projects in SONAR, I will definitely share my findings...

NOTE: perhaps comically... sometimes I feel as if I just discovered the "ON" switch!
I'd share that revelation in all its' mutations but somehow... Well you know

I've talked about this before as have others, but I wanted to keep this info active.

For people trying to "wrap" dx and dxis as vsts so that they will work with the new Bit Bridge (works well with with Waves stuff):

1 Download this:

http://xlutop.com/buzz/zip/dxshell_v1.01b.zip

2. Unzip the files.

3. Create a folder in Program Files x86 directory. Name it what ever you like, possibly DXvsts.

4. Find the .dll files (and only the .dll files) for your dx plugins and copy and paste them into the new folder from step 3.

5. Drag the dxshell.dll file and shell2vst.exe files into the same folder from step 3.

6. In the folder, drag the dxshell.dll file on top of the shell2vst.exe file and it will wrap your files

You will now notice a new folder simply named DX. This contains all your wrapped vsts.

7. Open SONAR and do a vst scan pointing it to the DX folder and you should be good to go in 64 bit land.

Please note in the DX folder all of your native Cakewalk fx will also be "wrapped", but will not scan properly. You can go in this folder and delete those .dll files. You wont need them as they will open in SONAR anyway.

Hope this helps.

I can't wait to try this! Thank you - if I can get this to work I can stay in Sonar64 bit.

Good luck Dave. The instructions with the .zip file were cryptic at best so I wanted to post how I got it to work. Once I did it was soooooo cool to be able to work in 64bit land.

Again - Thanks You! I have been working in Sonar32 bit just to be able to access a handful of plugs that I have presets for that are tried and true for the sound I want. I always feel a little short-changed knowing I have the 64 bit version sitting there unused more often than not.

I'll post back after I get this working.

Thanks Freddie,

I will use that tip for sure! Ive been having quite fun with the arp just holding down various chords while playing  along with a bass and string track. I use the arp on the 3rd track with Omnisphere, and Virus TI.

& the arpeggiator can too.

I guess the question is/will be - if you dont have the discontinued P5 how do you make PTN files?

There is no reason to do so. P5 is dead. That is the only program that supports them other then Sonar with this update. Think of PTN files a MIDI groove loops. They are functionally the same.

To build your own arpeggios,  the Sonar arpeggiator only allows you to load PTN files though - how do you convert a Midi groove loop to a PTN file in S8.5.1?

Am I doing something wrong you think??

You may be running the 64 bit Sonar version and it may not be able to use those plugins. They are all DX 32 bit types.

Hi John,

I am running Sonar64 bit. Per post #8, I was trying to make some of the old plugs work - but they didn't... Shame, I like tracking with these plugs and replacing them later as needed.

I don't blame you. They are good plugins. I am very worried about CW's FX 3 Sound Stage. Its a great plugin and it should be updated. I am not the only one that would want that. I fear it wont be.

Amazing! Nomad Factory Blue Tube-Series work in SONAR 8.5.1, 64bit on VISTA 64bit
Nomad Factory Blue Tube-Series work in SONAR 8.5.1, 64bit. You need to un-install everything, even PACE, so follow my instruction and it will work for you too. You wont need to register them again either so that's cool.

How to install Nomad Factory Blue Tube-Series

  1. Un-install, Nomad Factory Blue Tube-Series.
  2. Un-install, Pace driver.
  3. Restart your computer., Cold Start!!(Not reset) Very important!
  4. Go to---> http://www.paceap.com/ on the right side on the top you see...--->
    END USERS

    Looking for the InterLok drivers?

  5. Download the installer, “Windows drivers”
  6. Now go to------> http://www.nomadfactory.com/downloads/index.html
  7. Download the new Packs, “Blue Tubes - Dynamics Pack v3”, Blue Tubes - Effects Pack v3, Blue Tubes - Equalizers Pack v3, Blue Tubes - Analog TrackBox.
  8. When Done, first install----> “PACE, InterLok”-driver you download...
  9. As you can notice it Install the new 64bit “Pace driver”---> Follow all instructions and after its done, it tells you Re-Boot computer! YES go head and re-boot your computer!! Very Important, to reboot!!
  10. Now got the Map there the ---> “Nomad Blue Tubes-series” were downloaded to.
  11. Extract all maps with “Windows VISTA”, or WinRAR.... extract tool!

Before you start Install!

12. I recommend you install all Nomad factory-plugins in a new map. So create a new MAP in--> “C:Program files(x86)/ Nomad Factory“ …...Here you can install all Nomad Factory- BlueTube series!

13. Important! Don't replace the PACE driver...that are included in Nomad Factory-maps..
Follow my instructions....instead

14. In all the “Nomad Factory-maps”-that you did extract, go to------> “3) Install the plug-ins”-map directly.

15. Inside that you find the “X*name Pack VST v3.3 Installer”.exe

16. Install it and follow the instructions. When prompt where to place the VST-plugins? Install them all plugins in location:----> “C:Program files(x86)/ Nomad Factory“ that you created earlier instead.

17. Go to ---> “4) Docs” and copy the Documents to “My documents”/”Nomad Factory” that has been created..

18. Repeat the steps 14.---> continue install all “Nomad Blue Tubes-series”-maps, “installers” until you are completely done!

Start SONAR 8.5.1, 64bit ---> and bridge them... you now how you do this all ready...
As you all can see with all amazing, SONAR 8.5.1, 64bit recognize all Nomad Factory plugins now. It doesn't halt anymore as it did previously in SONAR 8, 64bit.

    Good Luck!

    Regards

    +1 on the thread...

I'm also curious to know if you've gone to SONAR as your main sequencer / DAW...
I still use Adobe Audition 3 for the "quick" radio and TV voice work and I will once in a while go to ACID PRO 7
But on the main production desk, I'm exclusively SONAR and it's really proven a valuable decision

Yes I'm using only SONAR 8.5.1 64bit. I have even un-install Cubase, because I don't use it anymore! I'm so pleased that I crossgraded to SONAR. The best I ever did since I used Logic, I have never look back.

I have found out more technology tips that I will be happy to share with you all...
Noel have been so kind to help me out on one problem that I had with Melodynebridge. I'm so happy now, now when it works perfectly with new SONAR 8.5-bitbridge, with out any error message. So now even Melodyne is possible to bridge and overcome in SONAR 8.5

I will submit all this later and let you all know...
I have also other tips, enhancement, use of FREE DX wrapper too in SONAR 8.5.1 that “emwhy” already submitted.

    Best Regards
    Freddie

I got the Dx shell wrapper (suggested by EMWHY above) to work. One word of caution though, If you have any expired demo versions or previous dxi's that did not function even in 32 bit they will be brought in and wreck the scan.  Eliminate any that you don't use anyway to be sure.  I think this may have been one of Papi's problems.

When you do a VST rescan in 8.5 it also replaces the 8.3.1 scan info as well so if you crash it you won't be able to get 8.3.1 to work either.

    Update....of “emwhy” POST!

The DX wrapper work fine in SONAR 8.5. especially with “Melodynebridge”& Melodyne 3 Studio.
Now you can work with out any error message if you use the DX-wrapper version of “Melodynebridge” instead.

Also, there are more benefits, for those that use “SONY Soundforge”
All SONY plugins, that was exclusive use for “Soundforge”, get wrapped and can be used in SONAR 8.5 64bit now too! Sweet =)

There are a new DX-wrapper version, out now!... that you can download and use here..
    Its FREE.    http://xlutop.com/buzz/zip/dxshell_v1.0.2b.zip

    Un-Zip it! next off..

    “Emwhy-post”
( 6) In the folder, drag the dxshell.dll file on top of the shell2vst.exe file and it will wrap your files
You don't need to drag and do this moment (6.)  with SONAR 8.5 (I don't know about WAVES-plugins) because I believe SONAR-host are supporting shell plugins already. You can do like this instead with SONAR 8.5 64bit

      1. You make a new in “Program files(x86)” and call the new map: “32bitDX-wrapper”; example ----> C:Program files(x86)/32bitDX-wrapper/

      2. Copy to ---> "32bitDX-wrapper"-map
      - dxshell.dll,   ..*a wrapper for directx effects(dx) for use in vst host applications.
      - dxishell.dll,   ..*a wrapper for directx instruments(dxi) plugins for use in vst host applications.
I don't use this.... not recommended!
(- mfxshell.dll,    ..*a wrapper for midi fx plugins(mfx) for use in vst host applications, beware that not all mfx plugins may work with this wrapper.)

      3. Start SONAR. Go to Plugin Manager and add the new location for scan! ---> C:Program files(x86)/32bitDX-wrapper/

      4. Close and Re-start. SONAR scan all DX plugins.. If you get error message, don't worry, just close the message and SONAR continue to re-scan.

      5. Now close SONAR again.. and Re-start SONAR 8.5., 64bit.

      6. Go to--- Plugin manager in SONAR 8.5

      7. All DX plugins that has been DX-wrapped to VST are marked with “(0)”   in the ending --> example: “xxxx. (0)” in SONAR 8.5 Ready for use!

        Hope this helped!

        Regards
