Piano Roll Controller Pane showing CC data other than velocity - October 29, 07 10:54 PM ( #1 )
Hello,

I'm having an issue with the Controller pane in Piano Roll view. It is showing controller data that I don't care to edit (particularly foot pedal CC data on 8 different channels). This is obscuring my view of the Velocity data (the only data I typically change in the PRV's Controller Pane). I am able to close the other CC data tracks in the pane, however they re-appear every time I open a new PRV window. All my previous versions of Sonar, the Controller Pane only showed velocity, and I would like to return to this functionality if possible.

Here's a pic of what I want to get rid of. Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: Piano Roll Controller Pane showing CC data other than velocity - October 30, 07 1:35 AM ( #2 )
apparently these things are called "lanes" in the controller pane (the feature being called "Multiple Automation Controller Lanes")

I've read the documentation on the matter, and still cannot figure out why so many lanes are always popping up everytime I open up the PRV. I've tried the various options in the "Show/Hide MIDI Event Type picker" as well as the "MIDI Event Type picker" with no luck. Is there anyway I can completely disable this new "lanes" feature?

thanks!!

I found this problem today after dropping a midi file from internet into a project. Ugggggh!!!! how do ya remove unwanted controller panes, like the ones in the X in the above sonar picture?

Got this from sonar help file. This is what I tried, but when I re-open the prv, the lanes are there again that I deleted/pushed the minus sign on:

To Delete a Lane
To delete an existing lane, click the Minus button in the bottom left corner of the lane.

If there is only one lane that is opened, this command will close the Controller Pane.

Note: Deleting a lane does not delete any MIDI events from the track.

Ok update, I found info in a lot of the controller lanes. I erased that data and then clicked minus on those lanes, and the lanes would still be gone when I re-opened the pane.
Now, the 2 left still there, I cant find data in the lanes to delete, so minus doesnt make them go away when re-opening.

The manual aint giving me the answer. Hmm...

Nobody knows how to get rid of controller panes that ya dont want in PRV?

Cakewalks instructions in the manual do not work. Anyway, whatever, I can work around it :)

Sometimes I get 3 or 4 lanes just for foot pedal data! (depending on which channel the foot pedal data happens to be on when I punch in)

Man, I can't tell you how much that pisses me off. I only ever use velocity with midi, and that's all I want open. Since the birth of S7, I get the same thing you guys do, all of those lanes open and I have to take a break from the creative flow to mess around trying to close the stinkin' lanes.

No fun!

So I take it nobody knows how to permanently remove them? Susan migh know. She is a big midi person from what I gather.

Huumm, I've been thinking about upgradeing from Sonar 4 but the image above and the comments I see here are showing me some real "CAUTION" lights.

I guess I need to download the DEMO version but I hate doing that for fear it might mess up what I've got going with Sonar-4.

Since midi is the main thing I work with, this is definitely a concern.

I can only tell you this problem is equally frustrating for me.

I didn't spend much time trying to figure it out; I assumed there was a way but figured I would learn it later.

So, I am equally interested in this answer. For me editing velocity data in Sonar 5 was far more intuitive. I want it back!

In my experience, I only get lanes for controller data that exists and yes, they come up automatically each time you open the PRV even if you've used the 'minus' sign to close them previously.

If you think you don't have controller data for a lane that is showing up, you probably just aren't seeing it. Go into the event list and look for it.

There should be an option to "remember" what lanes you have open or closed when you open a PRV window. If there is already this option, I'd like to know about it.

That's what I'd really be interested in, that's for sure.

You should see what happens when you use Garritan Jazz and Big Band. Many of the nuances of the library are controlled by different CCs. When I open piano roll, I have a lot of work to do to get it back into usable shape. I now just minimize the window rather than closing it.

I'm trying to get in that habit, but it's hard. I'm so used to using ALT+5, that I can't break the cycle.

Cakewalk, can ya chime in on this thread or simply is it a known situation?

I know I'm jumping on this thread a bit late, but this 'controller lane' behavior has irritated the heck out of me, too.

I HAVE discovered one workaround, and that is to always open the PRV window with a hotkey, and never close it. So, in other words, I use hotkeys to switch back and forth between the PRV, TrackView, and ConsoleView -- never closing those windows, just letting the new window which pops up when I press the hotkey take the forefront. Without the PRV ever closing, it remains with whatever controller lanes you've allowed to be there and changes instruments according to what you have selected in the trackview or the inspector side bar thingy.

Hope this helps.

Use event view instead of piano roll to see - and delete - all events you want to delete in a track.
No events are hidden in event view, unless you filter hem using the filter buttons.

RE: Piano Roll Controller Pane showing CC data other than velocity - February 24, 09 4:43 PM ( #20 )
Hey guys,

Yes, when the PRV is opened, a lane is created for each unique type of event (plus velocity) found on the track(s) opened in the PRV. I can see how that would be a problem when opening the PRV for clips that have lots of nuance CC data. Currently there is no mechanism for the PRV to remember which lanes are showing between opening and closing the PRV. It's something we could consider implementing in the future. The PRV DOES remember which lanes are showing between save/load of the project if the PRV is open when you save. In the mean time, minimizing rather than closing the PRV might be the best workaround when dealing with tracks with very disparate event types.

RE: Piano Roll Controller Pane showing CC data other than velocity - February 26, 09 1:11 PM ( #21 )
Thanks, Bob. Please do consider different options for making the controller lanes more customizable. For those of us doing midi orchestration with lots of CC data and 65+ tracks, it would be great. In general, I'd love to see Cakewalk implement more interface design geared towards folks who do trailers, sountrack, midi orchestration for film, TV, etc.

In fact, would it be possible someday to add, maybe, a forum for film/soundtrack/tv composers?

Thanks again,

Back on this topic.... is there anyway to have the controller pane remain at the same height when you re-maximize the PRV window? Currently everytime I maximize the PRV window, the controller pane (lanes) default to a set height and NOT the size to which I had just vertically expanded it before I minimized the view. Cakewalk, PLEASE make the controller pane more user friendly.

Thanks!
