FIREFLY - ELECTRONIC MODERN JAZZ - April 23, 12 4:39 PM ( #1 )

Hey this one sort found its way here faster then I thought it would but heres the catch , this is the short version ! I say that because I might add a bridge section to it and a ending chorus section , see where I end up with that next week .

Hi Radio, nice song.  For a jazz production it has an interesting, etherial melody that I like.  I also like the counterpoint synth in the background.  However, what caught my ear was the drum pattern from 1:06 - 2:10.  It just didn't seem to fit, as it sounded more like a marching cadence than a jazz beat.  I think a syncopated part would fit much better, or,at least, the earlier part that you used.  Still, with a bit more work, you have a winner on your hands.
All the best,
Lynn

Thanks Lynn , thanks for the comments and advice . I will check that out and find a tradeoff that might work in that area you speak of  .

Thanks Lynn for pointing that out  , I fixed that section by swapping it out for a nice Jazz pattern that fits nicely now .

Thanks ! Radio

I would not call that style jazz...... electronic yes, dance maybe..... the drum changes actually change the groove (feel) of the song... to a semi- swing....

There is IMHO too much repetition of the chord pattern. there wasn;t a break that took it to a chorus or a bridge. It stayed on two chords throughout.

However..... shorten it to 30 seconds or so and it could work in a commercial setting the background & mood.  the sounds of the synths are good.

Gee thanks Herb for that torpedo , DANG was that something that just slammed into me ! Just for the record Herb theres more then ONE chord , you make it sound like I'm pounding away on one chord ! Just for the record Herb theres more then TWO chords try about FOUR in the first verse section !

I like the minimalist approach. You could do more with it, but that would make it a new song. This would fit well in many of my playlists. Not sure I would call it Jazz. Definitely ambient e. I found the low end a bit over pronounced in relation to the mids and highs. A tad boomy at times.

Thanks Shad , yea I wanted to add more to what is already here . By the way HERB I just went back in and replayed the first verse and counted all the chords I was playing in the first verse .
Theres a total of FIVE chords total NOT TWO , lets see how many single notes make a chord ? Try a three note chord or a four note chord even seven notes using two hands .

Another thing to remember is a Drum fill or even a Crash cymbals  can be a LINK leading into the chorus or a Bridge . In this I'm using Drum fills , thanks Shad for your comment .

Hi, James,

You've got a very smooth, nice sounding piece of  jazzy electronica here!

I really like how the piano floats above the ambient, atmospheric sounding backing pads, and the little synth melody line that comes in at around 2:08 make for a pleasant sounding, clean outro.

Very nice, James, great work!

Thanks Bob for the comments on this short song , I posted it under Modern Jazz wondering how this would fit in and so far my ratings on this electronic jazz song on SoundClick isn't doing too bad .

Thanks Buddy !

I kind of like this.  It grooves along at it's own pace.  Nicely played and produced.

I really like te bottom end, thats my thing having enough bottom end.

radio - I like this feel.  Lots of rumble down low (I was told that just recently and am working on cleaning that up) but I like it.  Really like the playing.  This might be a tad shy in the high end also.  Did you happen to run it through a spectrum analyzer to check?  That's something that could be tweeked in mastering.

Hi Rimshot ! Haven't had alot of time to do much of anything lately , sort been in limbo after this stomach virus I caught so for a few weeks I haven't been feeling like doing much of anything . Finally started feeling better a few days ago , a friend at WalMart told me six employees caught the same thing so maybe thats where I picked it up from .

Anyway not sure if I will keep messing with this or jumpstart something else , I sort like it as is for now .

Thanks ! Radio

i like the structural changes although i think there are some spots-not all-that the piano could've been quantized more tightly.

Thanks for the comment , thats true but sometimes you lose that natural playing feel in your playing when you quantize a recorded track making the piece your playing sound sort of unnatural .
Hey thanks for sharing your comments on this piece of music , thanks for the listen !

Interesting how the beat changed to a swing feel at 1:05, and then changed back to a straight beat at 2:09... cool tune...

Thanks , alittle bit different with quick changes within the beat & groove . Alittle of that is good I think when your trying to make the music somewhat tasteful in the listeners ears .

Definitely a strange low rumble going on throughout the entire piece.  If that's the bass part you should bump it up an octave or two.  I'm not hearing anything that I would call jazz, but I'm not the style police.

Cheers,
J

This could certainly fall into the C-Jazz category.   I like the beat change too, but anything that helps a tune not be danceable is a winner in my book    Captivating beat.

This is pretty cool James.

I like the change to the swing feel in the drum pattern.

If it was me, I'd really let the bass wander about a bit more in there.

Thanks Steve , yea maybe the bass track is a bit low but for now I think I'll leave it be while I work on this new song I started last night . I created a cool drum track last night for my new song project , today I start working on some sequencer tracks and chord progressions . That should fill my day with some excitment , I say that because chord progressions is my grey area . Hopefully I will find some new interesting chords for this new song project and then create a nice sounding bass track to work off of .

Thanks again Steve !
