Sonar and Linux - February 25, 13 11:53 AM ( #1 )
We are some people out here, who would like to switch to Linux, but we need support from the software producers.
I kindly ask of Cakewalk to take Linux in consideration.

Best regards

Thomas

Re:Sonar and Linux - March 04, 13 11:06 PM ( #2 )
hello thomas.

i myself am very fond of linux, but to code sonar for linux would be a huge project.
im sure if your using linux you know how well its being recieved by users.
but still the market is relitively small,i say small compared to microsoft/mac

There would have to be a very large demand for it,other wise the paid man hours to re-code sonar in linux just wouldnt be a wise investment.

i like your idea though  :)

they use M$ libs.. so it's not gonna happen.. it has been brought up a few times in the past..

I'm guessing at least one baker, used linux / nix in the past :)

Sonar and Linux could be one heck of a combination.  It's not that the bakers couldn't use linux libraries to reproduce what they have already coded.  The problem is going to be the limitation of hardware support.  Alsa, Jack, and OSS is written by volunteers and many of the soundcard drivers lack supports that are needed for many people such as multiple inputs//outputs on a soundcard.

I fear that Sonar getting into Linux would be the same debacle as Wordperfect Office 2000 for Linux.  It was microsoft code ported through Corel's own version of WINE and it was a disaster.  People bought it for as much as $150 and it wouldn't work.  The program itself would hardly run.  When you could get the program to run, it couldn't hardly print a readable page because printer support at the time was sketchy at best.

The expectation is that the company would have to establish a team of personnel just to handle corrections to ALSA and Jack code just to get the sound processing to function correctly.  As of now, I don't think Linux has any program such as Ardour, Rosegarden, or Audacity that can use VST/AU plugins.  The plug-ins for Linux are ... LDSPCA???  So there would have to be an entire team assembled to handle implementation of plug-in management for Linux.

Then, as if all that wasn't enough, you have the issue of sharing code.  IF someone uses gpl-code to create something, or if someone modifies a piece of gpl-code (general public liscence) that someone has to give that code back to the system for everyone to see.  Most US companies would never consider paying someone to study, write, and troubleshoot code and give it to everybody else for free.  Red Hat has a niche market and are the closest to successful in the US marketplace as far as linux goes.  Sun Microsystems is GONE, it died a slow, painful death.  And the closest thing to a commercial office suite on LINUX, StarOFFICE is gone, replaced by the free OpenOffice.org or Libre Office.

Linux is a capable operating system; but I don't expect to see many US-based, commercial ventures go into public domain on the promise of "just providing for hire consulting services."

Hey guys. Thanks for your comments. You are right. The market for Linux is still too small. I wonder will there ever be a market? - guess time will show.

The linux market may end up piggy backing on the Android market. Although based on Linux, the drift between the two has widened. There is belief among linux experts, including the inventor that the two streams will eventually reconnect. This would be beneficial to both. The world of android gives Linux a larger user base and Android would benefit by having the Linux world bridge some of the gaps in multimedia performance that plagues androiude apps now. Musical apps in android suck compared to apple aps in that area.
