Help with MIDI sync

I have MC3 and have some trouble with MIDI sync.

I am tyring to sync my Korg DAW to MC3 in my computer so that I can run some MIDI parts with MC3 and run my DAW at the same time. I do this now with an old version of Cakewalk guitar studio V1 and it works great. I just got MC3 and wanted to do the same thing.

When I try to sync MC3 to my DAW, I set up under options>project> and clicked the MIDI Sync button, but MC3 will not sync. It "arms" (tells me that it is waiting for play from the DAW) but never takes off.
Note that i have all the correct setting through my MIDI set up and on the DAW.
I know that my MIDI set up is OK because I can close MC3, load Cakewalk Guitar Studio, and it will work with it just fine.
Also, I can use MC3 to run midi sound modules through my MIDI set up and it works well for that, just not the sync.

I checked the forums and there is some issue with weather or not MC3 has a sync function? Does MC3 actually have MIDI sync in the program menu section, but it does not actually work? I could have some setting bad MIDI setting in MC3, but let me know what you think.

Thanks for any help!

SHS4 supports MIDI sync, but MC does not. SHS4 does not support MMC,SMPTE,MTC, however, you must get Sonar for those functions.

    Beagle,

Thanks for the quick responce. If I can ask, do you know that SHS4 supports MIDI sync from using it, or is it noted in documentation somewhere?

If SHS4 has MIDI sync thats all I need, but I would hate to upgrade to SHS4 only to find I actually have to upgrade again to Sonar.

    Thanks again.

I have not used it myself.
    Here's CW's sync page:
    http://www.cakewalk.com/support/docs/synchronization.asp

This page states that CW HS do not synchronize to external clock sources, however, it was written before SHS4 was released. This thread has info from folks who have used the MIDI sync in SHS4.

If you need more evidence (which I don't blame you if you did!), call CW and verify that with a technical sales rep. 1-888-CAKEWALK

According to MC3 docs, no MIDI machine control or send/receive MIDI time code. However, with Calkewalk product manuals, you don't always want to believe what you read!

    Beagle,

Thanks for the information. I went to call tech. help but MC3 is not supported by phone, you have to email. So I sent an email yesterday for clarification, and I will let you know what they say. I think I will ask over in the SHS forum to see if I can get a quicker responce.

    bilbo,

Thanks for the MC3 docs info. I had not seen that in my documentation, but I got the "USB Music Pack" (it is MC3 with a MIDI interface) and I think the manual may be different.

Well, really I was saying to ask a SALES rep if SHS4 will do what you want in order to VERIFY what I've told you here. I wasn't telling you to call tech support for MC. I know that phone support for MC is not available.

    I'm 99.99% sure that MC won't do it (I'm an engineer - you'll rarely get a 100% response from an engineer! ).

I'm also 99% sure that SHS4 will do MIDI sync, just not MMC, SMPTE or MTC. The only reason I'm not 100% on this is because I've not personally used the MIDI sync.

I'm not discouraging you from asking on the SHS forum, but the link I provided you above came directly from that forum recently and they may point you back to the same thread.

    Beagle,

Thanks, you were right from the start. Help like yours in these forums is great. For the record, tech support emailed me back quickly each day after I emailed them, which was great. Makes me feel better about sticking with the Cakewalk products.

To conclude for anyone following this post, tech support says:

MC3: No external MIDI sync, no MTC

SHS4: Yes to external MIDI sync (BUT ONLY WITH NO AUDIO TRACKS, MIDI only), no MTC

Sonar Producer and Studio have MIDI Sync and full MTC

I only need external midi sync so the upgrade to SHS4 looks good for me. Thanks again for your help

Great, Indy - and you've confirmed something for me that I wasn't sure of which is that the external MIDI sync only works if you have a MIDI ONLY project in SHS4.

Would you mind posting that email here so we can reference it?

    Beagle,

Here are the two responces I got:

    ***7/15****
    Phil,
Music Creator 3 does not have external sync. SONAR Home Studio has
MIDI Synch which allows you to sync to MIDI devices when there are no
audio tracks. Then, SONAR Producer and Studio have MTC which allows
you to sync to any device that can send or receive MTC.

    ****7/16****
    Phil,
Yes, SONAR Home Studio can slave to MIDI sync.
