Tip for SE Reflexion owners

I recently bought one of these and have been pretty pleased with the results for my home recording studio/office. However, I hate the stupid bulky, over-engineered, and over-priced clamp assembly, which weighs much more than the filter itself and makes the whole assembly VERY unstable. Many users have purchased huge studio mic stand/boom combos that cost hundreds of dollars just to be able to mount their Reflexion and mic setup and prevent the whole assembly from crashing down on the floor and ruining their expensive condenser mics. So, here's a cheap and stable solution (assumes that you already have a decent mic stand/boom to support your mic only).

First, buy one of these adapters (<$10 shipped):

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/286146-REG/AKG_KM216_3_8_Male_to_5_8_.html

Second, buy one of these or similar standard upright mic stands (if you don't already have an extra one):

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Musicians-Friend-DieCast-Mic-Stand?sku=450829

Attach the Reflexion filter to the mic stand using the adapter. Use a locking washer on the male end of the adapter for best results. Now, the filter is center-balanced and not top-heavy at all, so the risk of tipping has been reduced dramatically compared to using the SE clamp. Raise the Reflexion filter to the appropriate height, then place the mic stand/boom behind it or off to one side with the boom extended over the Reflexion filter and the mic centered and hanging down in front of the filter. Attach your pop filter to the mic boom and extend it front of the mic. Voila!

You can achieve similar results with a camera tripod. Now, if SE would just include the mic stand adapter with the Reflexion filter and make that big clumsy and heavy clamp assembly available as an optional purchase, they would probably be able to knock a hundred bucks off the price of the filter!

    cryo,
Glad your enjoying yours. I bought 1 about a year ago and sent it back because of the clamp system. It was bulky and got in the way. Looks like you came up with a useable idea tho'.

...the clamp system...was bulky and got in the way.

This is what happens when you let engineers run amuck and I work with a bunch 'em, so believe me, I know!

    Cheers Cryophonik

I've been using your orignal method for a while now (which you advised me on).

Lol...I can't believe this newer solution was staring us in the face with the original parts being altered. Great.

    Thanks again
