For anyone who needs instrument definitions for the new Korg M3 - I have them for the factory-preset Combis and Programs, and the Producer programs. The programs also include patches for the EXB-RADIAS expansion board.

Simply send me an email to magnoliaproductions (at) blueyonder (dot) co (dot) uk and I'll return a zip file containing all three of these.

I have a Korg TR (Trinity) Rack, and I am having problems creating a new Instrument Definition File. I can't seem to make the dang thing change from combi to prog mode by defining banks alone. There must be something else to it. Perhaps the M3 is similar enough for me to review and copy some settings. Can you please send me a copy at bianders@yahoo.com?

To Barrypicker: to make the Trinity switch from Program to Combi mode, you'll need to transmit a SysEx MIDI value. I'm not using a Trinity, but on the Triton the SysEx values to switch to Program mode are "F0 42 30 50 4E 02 F7" and the values to switch to Combi mode are "F0 42 30 50 4E 00 F7." Obviously it's the 02 and 00 values that determine the mode. (04 switches to Seq mode and 06 to Sampling.)

Check the MIDI implementation charts in your manual and you should find the proper Trinity ID code. The 42 IDs a Korg.

There's a quick way to determine the proper codes: Place you Trinity in Combi mode and start recording a track in Sonar (you don't have to play anything.) After a measure or two, press the button on your Trinity to switch to Program mode. Stop recording and use the event view to look at the SysEx data codes. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply to my question. I think I understand what you are referring to. I need to go thru the Trinity manual to verify your settings. It seems then that I can only have one mode on at a time. I would be out of luck if I wanted channel 1 of the DAW to play the COMBI bank 'A' sound 1, and channel 2 of the DAW to play back the PROG bank 'A' sound 1 (at the same time). It seems like its an 'either/or' situation, that can be toggled via a sysex. Is that how you see it too?

Basically, yes, you can only be in one mode at a time. There is a partial way around this, however. If you're in the Trinity's sequencer (multi-timbral) mode to gain use of all 16 MIDI channels at once, you can copy a Combi to either tracks 1-8 or 9-16 through the Korg's interface. (Since each Combi can include up to 8 different programs, the Korg will want to occupy 8 tracks.) Then you could have up to 8 programs on the remaining tracks.

Hullo! I'm another M3 and Sonar user (or at least I'm trying to be) so the grand total now rises to the dizzy heights of 3.

I've only just started using Sonar (in the last couple of weeks) and even more recently took delivery of my M3 (in the last few days) and I must admit that I'm on a very steep learning curve so your Instrument Definitions would be VERY welcome.
