Tascam FW-1884 Installation Questions

OH THE JOY! Tascam FW-1884, Sonar 7PE and ADS PYROPCI64 Firewire interface all arrived today.

Hello to all and thanks for looking.
I joined the ranks of FW1884 users (well owners, I'm ready to be a user) and I am ready to install.

I have a clean install of Win XP Pro (32bit) ready for Sonar, and I would SO like this to be as painless as possible!

So I have some questions...

PCI Interface:

1. The interface has no CD, Windows has all the necessary drivers? Any special drivers I need to find and download?
2. After install of the interface I install the SP2 patch KB885222 and edit the registry for 400MPS, right?
3. I found another MS patch KB904412, is this one necessary?
4. Anything else I need to do before I proceed? Should I disable the onboard Firewire. I have a couple of external drives but I always use the USB for those.
5. ADS has a utility for checking the FW interface wmcap.exe; anyone ever run that? Is it necessary?

TASCAM FW-1884:

I have downloaded "FW-1884_v160", the FW-1884_firmware_updater_183_49.exe, and FW1884_win_SONAR_v1.22.
So here is my plan.
Install "FW-1884_v160" and connect the FW-1884 to the computer. If all goes well run the "updater". Load Sonar 7PE and install "FW1884_win_Sonar_v1.22".
At this point launch Sonar, go into "Audio and "Midi" in Sonar and (holding my breath and keep my fingers crossed) hope I have the FW listed as my Audio & Midi interface. If all goes well there, open "Control Surfaces", set that up and hopefully be making music.

1. Any suggestions on the install procedure?
2. Anything special I need to do, look for, or be careful with?

Thanks in advance!

    Hey Tom,

Welcome to the ranks - I think you are going to find that you have made a very good investment (Even with Tascam's legendary lack of support...)

Make yourself a little home here - http://tascamforums.com/index.php

This is a very good privately owned and member supported forum - There is a Sticky at the top of the FW1884 section and also a complete walkthrough of the set up steps - New 1.60 drivers are at Tascam's site under the resources tab. I don't know why it is still in Beta but e-mail Tascam's Tech Support and have them send you the 1.22 Control surface dll. It's also in the big thread here. Get's the control surface back to about 95% full efficiency

Despite it's rocky road since S6 - It's a very solid and high quality interface - But you already know that

Congrats and good luck - Let us know how you get on

Edit - I'll just post this here for you - http://tascam.com/products/FW-1884/pdf/setup_guide_e_1_00.pdf

DK, if I read the original post correctly, Tom already has the 1.22 beta SONAR driver.

Tom, did you say your firewire PCI card has no drivers? I'm surprised by that. I hope it has the Texas Instrument (TI) chipset, since many of us have found that the TI chipset is needed to work well with the FW-1884.

I've never heard of that KB904412 patch, so clearly my system works without it.

Yes, I did install the other Microsoft patch to ensure 400 speed after installing XP SP2. I have also read the somewhat complicated instructions in another post on this forum that directed us to a vendor's site where you manually copy SOME of the 1394 drivers from SP1 (dating back to 2002). I am hesitant to apply those instructions, since another poster indicated his system stopped working. I haven't read any followup from that person yet. Although I did install the Microsoft patch, my individual drivers were all updated to recent dates (August, September 2007) so I'm wondering whether the newest drivers overwrote the patch.

However - this is all minor stuff. Go ahead and install and test your new equipment without worrying about all these things. Then post your results and problems, if any.

    Good luck.

    Riojazz,
Yes the ADS Pyro has the TI chipset, went TI after reading all the threads I could find. No CD though. The ADS web site says "No drivers available for this product". The only download for one of their other PCI FW cards is a DirectX downlaod. I guess it runs on the Windows Firewire drivers. We'll find out! Have to finish up a home theater install for the wife this evening, plan to install the FW tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement, I'm sure all have plenty to post tomorrow.

Don't run the firmware updater! 2007/11/07 23:11:59 (permalink)
DON"T RUN THE FIRMWARE UPDATER! Call Tascam first!

I believe that your unit already has the firmware update built-in, and that updater is for older units. I don't know what the thing is supposed to do, but I was told by a tech at Tascam that it was unnecessary to use it. I was told that once was OK, but what ever you do, never run it TWICE. Maybe it could mess up the unit. Please call the Tascam tech help to see what that thing is for, and what happens if you use it unnecessarily. Don't panic, but check it out. Don't think that you need to use it every time you install the unit like the drivers (like after moving it to a new PC, or after wiping the present one, for housekeeping purposes).

    OH THE JOY!!
Install went smoothly, loaded v1.60 and the new Sonar patch. I did the first install to my "general OS", that's where my existing Sonar lives, and installed along side my Gina Echo and Motu Midi Express; NO ISSUES. Things seem to work solid. The ADS FW interface installed without a hitch, evidently its happy with the generic Windows drivers, and the edit to the registry was no big deal. SO FAR, SO GOOD. Will spend the weekend intalling 1884 and Sonar 7 to the new DAW OS.
Thanks to all for your help and encouragement!
    Question for FE-8 users.
Can the FE-8 be setup to control the Busses while the FW-1884 controls the tracks? I like to put Guitars, Vocals, Drums, Keys, etc on seperate Busses.
    Thanks again,
