Soft Synth Automation Solution

Hi guys,

I am aware of the vsti automation copy and paste issue, I wondered if anyone has come up with a useful work around other than record all automation as midi controllers in the piano view.

Lets say I create a complex piece of automation for the filters in my soft synth at the beginning of a track, I later decide I would prefer this portion of the track at the end of my song. Obviously I can cut and paste the midi clips but how do I move the accompanying automation to the end as well? (assuming there is automation in the middle of the track preventing me dragging the nodes all the way to the end).

I appreciate the easiest work around is to record the changes as midi in the clip but I much prefer to use automation due to the easy of control and clear visual display.

All suggestions welcome.

Peace.

If you cut before you paste a box appears in the advanced Cut/Copy menu. Read this it has a more detailed discussion on copying automation.

Hi and thanks for the reponse. This does cut and paste but the pasted automation is actually orphaned and no longer controls the softsynth automation. If I right click on this new automation and try to assign it I am only given options fr track parameters and not the parameters of te soft synth.

Do you have any other ideas?

    Thanks for your help.

i would like to see a "paste inverse" function - inverting the envelope. If I have two things that I am panning around the soundstage, it would be nice to automate one, copy the envelope and paste the inverse to another track. OT I know. Sorry.

Even in the same track? I under stand how it could be orphaned if you are copying automation to a different Synth. I didn't try to paste in the same track. I'll do that when I get to the DAW.

Yes on the same track unfortunately, using the cut, paste method it creates an orphaned envelope that can only be assigned to track parameters. To my understanding Sonar only lets cut and paste work for track parameter automation ie Pan, Level ect and FX parameters. One work around is to drop the soft synth into an fx bin and then automation works fine. The only downside (and this is fairly substantial!!) concerns multitimbral instruments in that al outputs will obviously be routed to the same Sonar track.

Space Cowboy, I'm with you on that one. Sonar 8 (or even one last cheaky update) would benefit from a revamped automation section.

You could try editing the start times of your controller events in the event-list window.

But I suppose if you've got more than a few, this could be a major PITA.
