Power off or on???

I'm getting different answers to this one.. My question is this:
Should I turn the power off on my audio interface (Edirol FA-101) and my monitors/sub (KRK's) when they are not being used? I've called the manufacturer of the Edirol and they said to turn everything off when not being used. The KRK people said it wouldn't hurt anything to leave them on if you use them on a daily basis.. I've also spoke to a friend of mine that has an actual studio (mostly hardware), and says he never turns anything off. So, what do you guys do? Power on all the time or power down? Any suggestions would help.

Dual 20" Mon's,
MOTU Ultralite, SONAR 7PE, Reason 4,

I never power ANYTHING down. Ever. Unless there's a major storm coming, and I think my UPS's won't last long enough, or I'm going on vacation for longer than 5 days.

It takes me 20 minutes to power up my studio. I'm in there at least 2 hours per day (usually quite a bit more) and that 20 minutes, plus the wear and tear (powering up and down increases potential for microfractures to circuitry, due to expansion and contraction while warming up and cooling down) is just not worth it.

That and in less than 2 minutes, I'll have forgotten why I went down there in the first place! lol

I think cooling down and heating up electronic components is not good.
Devices with bearings may last longer shut-down (short term) when not in use but my opinion if I shut down for the drives, that usually stop spinning on there own now, I'm doing more damage powering down or up.

With those two thoughts I don't power down unless there is an electrical storm. Then I unplug from the wall too.
My biggest concern is a filtered, steady power supply while it's on. I believe that is the "life" of your system.

More than likely all your stuff will be outdated before there's a problem either way.

Just my thoughts, right or wrong.

I don't know if this applies to electronic gear, but in the lighting industry (warehouses, factories, offices, etc) it's commonly known that lights left on all the time last much longer than those which are turned off at night. Sometimes as much as 50% longer.

I've always wondered if this applies to vacuum tubes in amps & microphones.

Overall I guess it's best to keep the power on if you use your gear every day. But what if you only record 2-3 times per week. Would you guys still leave your gear on if it's not being used for more than 24 hrs?

P.S. To answer the original question, I'm a "power-down" kinda guy. But 75% of my gear is computer stuff. And computers go obsolete within 3 years anyway, so I'm not too concerned with making them last forever. I'd rather save the juice.

Have you had the wiring in your home inspected recently?

A huge percentage of home fires that aren't caused by falling asleep while smoking, are caused by shorts in wiring. If not having your house burn down sounds like fun, then you can increase the odds by having as few electronic items on as possible.
