"Unable to open audio record device" Error Message

"Unable to open audio record device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use"

That's the message that I just started getting with Sonar Home Studio XL 6.2.2.

I haven't had this before, and I don't know what is causing it. Maybe a recent Windows XP Home update? I tried recording and playing something, which did work. But when I try to play any other recordings, that message comes up. Is there a way to fix this? I'm using ASIO drivers with my Creative Audigy 2 Platinum Ex, which have been great. I tried to disable all of Windows' sounds (I read this could help), but to no avail. Again, the playback of these files used to work, and now they don't. The only thing I can think of that changed was an automatic Windows update, but other than that, I'm out. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

A windows update could have done that if it updated your SB card's drivers. the error message is describing a driver compatiblity problem and honestly soundblasters are not good cards for working with sonar (or any DAW). you can try changing back to WDM driver mode and see if that helps, or you can try ASIO4ALL.

getting a soundcard designed for recording would stop the problem as well.

Thank you very much. I will look into that. I thought it wouldn't update the sound card's drivers without asing me first (like optional updates), but I'll see what happened. I forgot about something though: I also tried hooking up my Yamaha PSR-293 keyboard. It uses USB for its MIDI interface. Could this have caused the problem, and if so, is there anything I can do to make both work? I initially tried rolling back to a restore point that was before I did anything with the keyboard, but I still had the same problem, which is why I didn't think the keyboard messed anything up, although I could be wrong. Thank you!

the MIDI keyboard shouldn't have anything to do with the error you got unless for some reason the drivers for the keyboard did something to the drivers of your soundcard.

you might want to look at what has been installed lately and maybe even consider a restore point in windows.

that might not be what's causing your problem, but the error message you stated is an audio card driver error of some kind.

    Fruc,

Give this a read- it may or may not be helpful, but still good info:

Thank you to everyone for their help! I downloaded Asio4All, and the error stopped appearing. I've been able to record with it as well. I will have to save up for a true audio card, but hopefully this will hold up in the meantime. Thank you again!
