mp3's Higher than 320kbps!?

Hey recently i've come across several mp3 files with bitrates quite higher than 320kbps such as 392kbps,459kbps etc and they play fine in windows media player too. How is this accomplished. I was aware of 320kbps being the highest- apparently its not anymore, but what encoders can we get that will achieve this kind of mp3 quality? thanks guys

i think variable bit rate (VBR) encoding will jump around based on the sound content of a particular section. you will get odd bit rate numbers that may change as the song plays... be aware though that some car and other hardware mp3 players may not play songs encoded above a certain rate (and some older ones will not like VBR period...).

yeah and also found there are commands you can use within encoders such as lame to affect these parameters such as weather you want to use variable bit rate(vbr), constant bit rate(cbr) and what bitrates you would like along with these. Thanks alot! that pretty much sums up what i was looking for and you're right, those bitrates dont always translate well to all players-i should know from my car stereo.

Lame has an option switch for free bit-rate but that isn't supported well I guess. AFAIK, many players (SW/HW) supports reading bit-rates over 320 but can't decode it properly ... up-to 320kbps only.

    Constant Bit Rate (CBR)
    -b n set bitrate (8, 16, 24, ..., 320)
--freeformat produce a free format bitstream. User must also specify
    a bitrate with -b, between 8 and 640 kbps.

    Variable Bit Rate (VBR)
    -v VBR
--vbr-old use old variable bitrate (VBR) routine
--vbr-new use new variable bitrate (VBR) routine (default)
    -V n VBR quality setting (0=highest quality, 9=lowest)
    -b n specify a minimum allowed bitrate (8,16,24,...,320)
    -B n specify a maximum allowed bitrate (8,16,24,...,320)
    -F strictly enforce minimum bitrate
    -t disable VBR informational tag
--nohist disable display of VBR bitrate histogram

--abr n specify average bitrate desired
