I have the same set up with home studio 6 and maudio fast track pro. Beagle had great advice. I copied his reply to me about a different issue, but it is a good starting point. Also, you can adjust your loutput evels on your guitar/bass, on the maudio device and in the console area in sonar. play with the levels so you dont hit the red and peak out. See Beagles advice below.

first, which driver mode are you using? with the m-audio fast track pro, I'd advise using ASIO driver mode. that alone might solve your problem if you've not disabled your onboard soundcard. to change to ASIO: OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = ASIO
    close SHS
    restart SHS

next, make sure that your sample rate in your project matches the sampling rate in your m-audio software. running at 44100Hz is typically good enough for home applications. set your project rate to 44100Hz and then check your m-audio software to make sure it matches. OPTIONS>AUDIO>GENERAL> press the ASIO button at the bottom of the window
that will bring up your M-audio mixer panel (make sure you open it that way, not from the systray).
on the HARDWARE TAB, check your sampling rate and make sure it's set to 44100.

    arathiel,
We'll need information about your system to help further.
CPU, RAM, OS, we know about the Fast track, any other hardware?
Have you seen any error messages?
Many drivers are very picky about how they are installed. Did you follow the M-Audio instructions exactly(ie, don't let the Windows installer do it)?

Good, that's in your favor at this point in time.
Do you have power management turned on? This can cause the computer to lose communication with a USB device.
Many times it is on by default with laptops.

Hmm. Just for grins, reboot your laptop, and check the physical connections on the USB cable. Switching to ASIO shouldn't cause you to lose the device. This is usually the preferred driver mode.

I just checked the M-Audio site.
They show a driver for XP(SP2-3) from June '08. Have you downloaded this driver?

arathiel - after you changed to ASIO driver mode - go back and look to make sure it did STAY in ASIO. if not, I'll have a solution for you to fix that.

before i could select usb device

Is your Fast Track listed by name, or does it show up as USB Device?
If the latter, it is not properly installed.

Does your laptop have more than one USB port?!
This is just a guess, but here's what I think may have happened.
You plugged the Fast Track into the USB port before the M-Audio drivers were installed. Windows assigned a generic driver to this device on this port, which is why it does not recognize the ASIO drivers.Even though you have re-installed everything, Windows is still assigning the generic drivers to this device on this port.
Now that you have the M-Audio drivers installed on the laptop, plug the Fast Track into a different USB port. The install sequence will start over.
Follow the M-Audio instructions to the letter. Do Not let Windows take over.
The UX2 is a decent unit, but so is your Fast Track. It appears you are fighting a Windows problem. Let's not scrap the Fast Track just yet.
