Has anyone tried the Berhinger B1 vocal mic.? For the price it dosn't look like a bad deal....the reviews are pretty good but has anyone here used it by any chance?

I haven't, but a lot of folks here use various Behringer products and can testify as to their overall quality.
I got the MXL 990/991 combo pack last year for $100 at Guitar Center. Condenser mics have definitely improved the sound of my vocals and acoustic guitars.

What can I do for a mic. that requires phantom power? The line 6 toneport that I'm using has no phantom power option. How do I address this issue. I'm currently using an sm58 but want to try a different mic. setup for recording that's why I'm fishing for info.

Same here. On the whole Behringer makes decent affordable products, but I don't have any direct experience with the B1.
The reviews I just read at Harmony Central were a bit disconcerting concerning reliability of this mic.
I also have the MXL 990/991 pack, and have been using it for just over a year.
No problems at all, and the 990 works well as a vocal mic. I mostly use it for acoustic guitar, but have the occasional vocalist here.
    Definitely worth looking into.

If you are happy with the Toneport (UX1? since you don't have phantom power)
A good option might be to get a Behringer Xenyx802 mixer, and send its outputs to the line in of the UX1. This would give you phantom power, and is about $60(US).
It also has the benefit of EQ, which can help compensate for your mic being sensitive to certain frequencies.

I looked at the 990 as well. What could I do for the power requirements? Do I need a mic. preamp or is there a decent studio mic that doesn't require phan. power?

I have a small tube preamp, a behringer MIC100, cost about $60 new from musiciansfriends, works great, and you can use it as a regular pre-amp with the shure, it really gives the mic a lot of character (I have sm57's), plus the 48v phantom power switch I have used with the MXL990. So it would handle both types of mic, and is not very expensive, and is a good, reliable tool.

LOL. Yeah, I took some liberties with artistic license.
Look at post #'s as line #'s.
There's a point to this, and I hope it's not too obtuse, but I'm going to let it ride for a bit, to see if someone can solve it.

Keneds, I don't think the mics with the shock mounts are available without phantom power. But I thought you was looking for an option to supply phantom power to a mic you already had, and, since you said you had a sm58, and was looking for phantom power, the behringer pre amp would be a good idea. The shure mics are great, work horses, I've had mine for over thirty years, and they wok as well as the day I bought them. But I have found that by running them through a preamp, low power, you get even more response from them.
Really, I thought I was answering your question...

I own an sm58 that I brought home from my bands rehersal space for recording at home but I was considering purchasing a mic for my home use so I had one here all of the time. I don't have phantom power capabilities at home at this time. Sorry for the confusion. I still don't get the inside joke. Whatever..... Thanks for the input.

    Sorry keneds,
That's a loop in the old BASIC code.
The gist of it is when the SM-58 (or SM-57) is recomended, it sends you back to post #3, where you said you have one.
Basically, you already have the studio standard dynamic (non-phantom powered) mic that most people will recomend.
A preamp such as the one Albert suggested would be a good choice, and give you future possibilities.
