"Come Back Up" - CCM pop
"Come Back Up" Rachael, vocal and lyrics (my 10 year old niece) Michael John, music My 10 year old niece surprised me by out of the blue she started writing songs (lyrics and melody) recently. Her first song a few months ago didn't have verse/chorus structure. So I told her then you should try to write at least two verses and a chorus, as most songs needs that. The other day she called me and said she had written a new song with verses and a chorus. Here it is. Without any music accompaniment she sang and recorded her song solo into my cheap pc mic ($5). I then wrote the music afterwards on the Yamaha XS to her recording. She has a long way to go, and no one in the family can sing at all, so it's very unusual she even wants and likes to sing. But to write a song like this is really good I think, even if just lyrics and melody. Using Sonar7, I made no adjustments to her vocal pitch- this is so she can learn to sing better on pitch as she develops her singing. I made minor adjustments to her timing in Sonar. The mix can be a lot better I know, but this was just for fun anyway. "Come Back Up" http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=761165&songID=7342511 LYRICS "Come Back Up" by Rachael I feel embarrassed I feel invisible I fell down There's a mistake on this road I'm at the bottom of an abyss And the walls are too steep, oh.. And what do I do now, you.. Come back up again If you don't believe there is a way of succeeding And if you don't try you'll never get up So you got to come back up again We all make mistakes We all have bad days, oh We have our ups and downs But you have to do this to turn that frown upside down You got to (chorus) We do get sad sometimes But God will make everything right With His love and His power You can, oh.. (chorus)

Lots of potential here for only 10 years old ! I think an upgrade on the $5 microphone might help a lot. It takes a lot of courage to do this but that's what we're all about. I can hear the potential and over time I'm sure it will pay off greatly. Keep her singing !!!!! -TAP-

I really have no idea why you think giving this girl false praise helps her in any way shape or form. The sooner she gets vocal coaching, the sooner we'll hear a note in tune

We all want to be honest, but at the same time, none of us wishes to discourage anybody. So we're all trying to be very careful how we address her effort. What I'm impressed with is that this girl has it in her heart to sing and do lyrics--that alone shows musical talent. And we don't want to squash that. Now hers is a very raw talent and needs lots of developing. But it's there, nonetheless, shown by her initiative in song writing and fearlessness in singing and in her willingness to learn. You did good, Uncle, by showcasing her here. Gives her more impetus to grow and improve. Gets her excited about music making and pulls her deeper into it. But I'd let her hear only the good stuff we say, she being so young and tender. And since you know the bad, you can help her overcome it. But we gotta tell the bad with the good so people can improve and yet take heart.

Yes Peggy, well said. Thanks for all the comments. FYI, she just started singing recently, and doesn't know what she is doing yet. No one in the family can sing at all- she sings better then all of us! But she needs help, so her parents told me she will be starting vocal lessons soon. For now, we are just having fun and I'm letting her express herself. We will certainly be recording new takes later, as she improves over time. (and she'll probably want this recording destroyed!)

Mike, Nice track and vocal performance - but I agree with upgrading the mic - it has that karaoke muffled sound.

You're a good uncle Mike! Everybody has a 'starting point'. It just needs to be worked/built upon. A few years back my 9 yr.old niece was taking violin lessons in grade school. She wanted to play a certain piece for the wife & I and we glady lent our ears. After 2 minutes of 'noise' (had no clue what song she was attempting),. we clapped and said "very good" and encouraged her to keep practicing. I think your niece did well for a 10 yr. old, especially the song-writing. If she pursues this art, who knows where she'll be musically a year from now. Nobody ever got worse from practicing!

I was raised up in a musical family. My mom would sieze the moment so to speak when others were around and really compliment my musical endevers and work. she took a differrent aproach to me when we were alone. she would show her interest in me more than say it. this was so cool. praise is good. i would say though that praising the persuit and willingness and giving support and such is coupled with helping and teaching. if it isnt too much for her id have her learn an instrument too. when the ear hears the notes on an instrument it helps the ear hear pitch but then again i guess thats what a vocal teacher does. i can say that years of playing live did hardly nothing to show me my vocs were not so good but after recording so many times i learned a lot. its great that you did this for her. i would do it as much as feasable. your work on this is very nice too. great job on that. if feels good to see someone lend hand to a child with desire. she wrote a very good song and wow all you did was say what to do jimmy
