Helpful ReplyTAL Vocoder set-up in Sonar 7PE

i cannot for the life of me get this plug-in to work. i have a vocal track set up, but i get no robot voice. supposedly there is supposed to be an internal synth that creates the effect, but it is not doing anything. can anyone help me get this set up correctly?

I don't know anything about the TAL Vocoder specifically, but the way vocoders work, you need to be playing (either live or via prerecorded MIDI) WHILE you sing (or while an audio track plays). Without both of these things happening at the same time, you won't hear any sound because there is nothing (the MIDI) to modulate the carrier (the vocal). HTH.

I'm guessing the midi side isn't setup.. the sound is within the vocoder by the looks of it , others have the sound from elsewhere.

i've used Vokator in the past, and that was easier to do the MIDI routing in the channels but that was because i could use the synth rack with Vokator, and then there was an option to rout the MIDI track to the Vokator in the synth rack. but since TAL-vocoder isn't installed via the synth rack, i can't find a way to rout a MIDI track to the TAL-vocoder instantiated in the channel's effects bin. maybe that is where my problem is . . . can anyone point me in the right direction????

I've gotten this plugin to work allowing me to modulate the output from a soft synth that provides the carrier signal, and a vocal track as the modulation source.

In summary, I create a bus that has the TAL Vocoder in "Input Mode" as an effect, then route the synth audio output to the left channel of the bus, and the vocal audio output to the right channel of the bus. In "Input Mode" the TAL Vocoder will use the signal in the right channel to modulate the signal in the left channel.

Here's the details to set this up:

• Insert a bus (BUS1)
  
• Insert TAL Vocoder as an audio effect on BUS1
  
• On the TAL Vocoder interface, turn on Input Mode by pressing the button
  
• Insert an audio track that will be the vocal modulation source (VOCAL1)
  
• Set VOCAL1 input to an audio source for your mic
  
• Set the output of VOCAL1 to BUS1
  
• Set the output pan of VOCAL1 hard right
  
• Insert a soft synth ensuring that you allow it to create your MIDI source track (MIDI1) and First Synth Audio Output track (SYNTH1)
  
• Set the output of SYNTH1 to BUS1
  
• Set the output pan of SYNTH1 hard left
  
• Set the MIDI input on MIDI1 to a keyboard controller
  
• Choose a patch on SYNTH1 that provides a good carrier signal
  
• Enable Input Echo on VOCAL1
  
• Enable Input Echo on MIDI1
  

With the above, you should be able to play on your keyboard controller and have the synth's audio output be modulated by vocals coming from your mic.

Would this work the same way in Sonar 8.5 Producer Edition? Since I'm blind, I'd like to work with a vocoder like this one with my voice.

Any plugin should work the same in 8.5 as it does in 7.

As I'm blind, I don't know which button is the input button, as my screenreader doesn't recognize image-based buttons. I use JAWS (Job Access With Speech) 10.0 and Caketalking 8.5 for Sonar 8.5 accessibility software.

Do GUI-less VSTs work better with your screen-reading software? There are a number of GUI-less plugins for dynamics, although I don't recall any vocoders. But if that's a possible solution, I'll, er, keep an eye out for you.

Is it because everything's on one screen, or does it have to do with how the knobs were implemented? Or that every knob has an associated text label?
 
I've done some reading on accessibility issues. Slau wrote a great blog post about it. If you don't know Slau, he's an outstanding musician, engineer, producer, and microphone expert. And blind. The article is here.
 
My curiosity about this stems from my day job, which involves creating user interfaces for my own (non-music related) software. I am embarrassingly ignorant when it comes to screen readers. Here's another question for you: does font size matter, or do screen readers not care how big the text is?
