Recording vsti knob movement automation via mouse?

Ive asked this before and am still not sure if it cannot be done.

If I add a vst instrument to the synth rack, and I want to record a knob movement, say a low pass filter envelope (or any other parameter the vsti has), by twisting the knob for that parameter in the vsti with the mouse, can this be recorded so it plays back automatically?

Currently I have to assign an envelope to it and draw it with a mouse instead of directly controlling the knob. I keep thinking its such a required feature it must exist!

i screamed "Automation problems" many times before.. ;) - i still have some serious bugs when trying to export/bounce the clip with the automation data

also notice the problem that planist had ( using the Synth Rack = no exposed parameters to automate ) -

Good Luck ... please come back and tell us about your experience with all that .. which synths you use... etc .
