Recording automation using a midi controller

I've got 4 of my rotaries set up to control 4 different knobs on my soft synth, not via ACT as that doesn't seem to work properly.

I want to record some automation of the synth knobs.  Set everything up to record the synth automation but it doesn't record when I turn the knobs on the soft synth via the midi controller (even though the knobs on the synth actually turn normally) but it does record the automation if I twiddle the knob on the soft synth via the mouse.  What's going on here then?  Surely I can record automation by moving stuff via my midi controller?

In SONAR 6 LE, to write-enable individual synth parameters, right-click the synth's Automation Write button in the Synth Rack, and choose Write Enable Parameter from the popup menu. This opens a dialog that allows you to choose which parameters to write-enable.

Keep in mind that your synth's manufacturer determines which controls (if any) you can automate. If your synth does not expose its controls to SONAR, you can not automate the synth. Please see "Automating Controls from the Synth Rack" under Help Topics for more information.
