8.5.1 - Dimension PRO hangs when loading some huge programs
Anyone else encountered problems with Dimension Pro in 8.5.1? 8.3.1 loads all programs OK but 8.5.1 hangs or crashes if I try to load some huge programs (eg. Grand Pianos that are app. 500 MB size). Could this be some kind of available memory related issue? I have 2 GB RAM. Windows virtual memory is enabled (automatic). I have similar problem with SessionDrummer3 when I try to load some Steven Slate programs. Sample loading hangs before all files are loaded. SD3 doesn't crash but Dimension Pro made Sonar do MiniDump. In 8.3.1 Dimension Pro has always worked OK (crashes occur sometimes but not this kind of).

At the moment, I'm thinking mine is a corrupt download But as I've said in other threads - it feels like there's a memory issue. My PC can handle it easily because they are still relatively small in the scheme of things but 8.5.1 is 'acting' like it's over-loaded. I can't say what it is - I'm not a PC guru but it feels like it's struggling. It has the signs of when you overload. 8.3.1 - no error message, no quirks, no weirdness 8.5.1 - awash with the little blighters

I have checked the memory several times with Memtest utilities and it's 100% working. I have been guided to test the system memory because of past Sonar crashes, too, but those crashes always been disappeared with new Sonar patches. 8.5.1 works nice and smooth but with Dimension I have a this problem.

My 8.5.1 feels like it needs a refresh button. Perhaps they could have one on the next version! Never had a problem before with an update - and it's not a bug - it just doesn't work properly. I'd love to be on the bug threads but I'm currently residing in pre-bug purgatory. Anyway others have mentioned the odd thing with slightly bigger files but nothing concrete as yet. Perhaps there's a setting we don't know of. I spent hours looking for the 'Work Properly' button but I couldn't find it.

If I open an S8.3.1 project (but has been saved in S8.5.1) & insert Dim Pro & load a large prog (eg DSFs piano larger than 500MB) DimPro fails to load the prog (sits saying "loading xyz.wav"). Though Sonar & DimPro will respond (DimPro makes no sound), DimPro will start acting more & more weirdly & the max loadable prog size reduces (it seems). Sometimes get "Unable to write file, disk may be full" error message if Sonar autosave kicks in. edit to add: This wasnt right If I open a similar S8.3.1 project in S8.5.1 DimPro will happily load large progs (737MB is the largest I checked) & behave itself. If I create a new S8.5.1 project DimPro will happily load large progs (737MB is the largest I checked) & behave itself. Weird! Edit to add: XP SP3 32bit, 4GB memory Process explorer says approx 1.6GB free memory with Sonar project loaded.

You can check if you are hitting a memory wall by looking at task manager. In Vista it will be called Page File It's on the Performance tab and is expressed as a ratio of committed memory to available commit. For example, mine at the moment is 3422M / 8165M or about 42%. If it starts hitting above 75% you should close other programs or insure your page file can grow. In XP it's more accurately called Commit Charge. Keep an eye on the total compared to the peak which are the same as the ratio in Vista. I should point out though that even with a larger page file that performance could suffer if the process commit is more than the physical RAM you have installed (even if it's somewhat less due to the OS loading up some of that memory) For Vista, you can view the process commit size on the Processes tab of Task Manager. If you don't see that column, open View -> Select Columns. Under XP, I believe you'd have to monitor the Process Performance counter for Private Bytes.

Hi Keith, Thanks for chiming in. Under XP SP3 32bit (using SysInternals Process Explorer) Rebooted no Sonar Avail Memory 2.7GB Sonar & project loaded (no DimPro) Available memory 1.76GB, process Working Set 924908, Commit charge Peak/Limit 24%, Current/Limit 24% Sonar & project loaded , empty DimPro inserted, process Working Set 955,560, Commit Peak/Limit 25%, Current/Limit 25% Sonar & project loaded , DimPro prog Duel Grand Pianos (737MB) load hung (loading cdmf_31.wav) Available Memory 1.05GB, process Working Set 1,626,320, Commit Peak/Limit 38.66%, Current/Limit 38.52%, Process Peak Private Bytes 1,640,076, Process Virtual Size 1,996,469. Raw Commit figures: Peak 1,962,152 Current 1,955,072 Limit 5,075,344 Task Manager raw Commit figures: Total 1,956,360 Limit 5,075,344 Peak 1,962,152 DimPro load currently hung for 15+minutes (so it's not just being slow) PS Commit figures are all for system rather than process.

It almost definitely has something to do with the process memory size - I found an older version of the same project but with fewer FX. DimPro loads the 737MB prog fine - Process Peak Private bytes 1.498GB, Virtual Size 1.75GB , Peak Working Set 1.491GB
