guitar rig plug-in midi learn

Can anyone tell me how to get the controller option of my Guitar Rig 4 plug-in to learn midi? I have found other ways of controlling the parameters using my PCR 300w/expression pedal and combonations of Controllers/Surfaces options using the PCR's USB and another midi interface. This requires a bit of setting up while changing presets or components in the plug-in. All I want to do is get my  foot pedal to control the five or six pedal-type effects in the plug-in and do nothing else. It seems to me that this option in Guitar Rig would allow this if I could only get it to "hear" my pedal. I got it to work once in the stand-alone mode of Guitar Rig, but have not been able to reproduce  that success.

 Any thoughts would be great.

It used to say this in the Guitar Rig manual...

    1) configure as synth (in Plug-in manager/plug-in options)
    2) create an audio track, insert GR in the fx bin from the softsynth menu
    3) create a midi track, point the output to GR (input from your midi pedal).

    I hope this helps.
